Did you decide/have to do a laparoscopy before IVF?

Just trying to see if a lap is the norm before moving to IVF.

I definately wanted it done. No way would I pay the money for IVF not knowing if something was wrong in there or not. I definately recomend it!

Thanks. I don't want it done, but I guess I have no choice. I had a horrible experience with a lap surgery in 07 and vowed to never do it again.

I did it as part of my fertility testings & had an ovarian cyst removed (I wasnt correctly diagnosed with endo either afterwards). I wouldn´t have done it again and was told not to by my IVF clinic.

Was it hard on you Bubble? How was it for you? I don't have any reason to suspect anything is wrong. I have 2 kids already, and only have pcos with IR, and hypothyroidism. Both are treated. I'm hoping to do an injects cycle or 2 before consenting to the lap, and then IVF last if I decide to go that far.

Hi there

The LAP went OK but I was in quite a bit of discomfort afterwards (really bloated plus the ovary ached) and felt rotten. I have hypothyroidism also which has gone a bit haywire since having the twins! I have endo but they didnt do anything with it during the LAP. My 2nd opinion at the clinic showed the other docs had messed around with my plumbing a bit. I did IVF due to the endo though. Have you done an HSG?

I'm worried about pain afterwards as well. With my lap gall bladder removal in 07, I was in the worst pain of my life, mainly due to the gas left inside me. I couldn't sleep, sit, or lay down for a good 2 days. It was absolutely miserable. I walked the floors and called the dr at 4am crying in pain. I'm not a wimp either. I have 2 herniated discs in my lower back that I live with daily, but this was 100x worse than that or my natural childbirth. I have had the HSG and all was fine and clear. My RE doesn't really suspect endo, but wants to just rule it out. I'm just not so sure.

I was the only "no" vote! Our issue was simply my DH's so it really didn't matter what they would have found in a lap. I guess it depends on why you are moving on to IVF treatments.
Me- 27- Tests show everything works perfectly!
DH- 36- SA results = 80 million, 30% motility (3% forward progressive), <1% strict morphology- Diagnosis= severe male factor infertility

IVF #1, 11/09- BFP! Its a girl! Born 8/18/09

Tried naturally for 1.5 years after my DD was born... guess things still don't work right!

FET #1, 01/11- BFP! at 6w

IVF #2- 5/11- 11 eggs retrieved, 9 fert! Hoping for a day 5 transfer.... grow babies grow!!
5/31/11- BPF!! on FRER!
Baby girl #2 due 2/10/12 :)

Well, we've done clomid, femara, and clomid+femara with trigger and IUI. We've done 6 IUI's, and all have failed except the one I just did last week, which probably will fail too. I think it would be more cost effective for me to try IVF since my insurance will cover it, up to 15K lifetime max. I have used a little doing my IUI's, but not that much. So, there should be plenty of money left to do IVF. The other option is injects/IUI. But, I'm trying to decide which is best. I do have a 2nd opinion appt set for 1/19 with a new dr. My current RE says I need a lap next. I don't have any symptoms of endo or any problems. HSG showed clear open tubes. We just aren't conceiving with the clomid/IUI's.

Hey! I voted "yes"...I think it is definitely worth having a lap for IVF if your RE recommends it...here's why: I had severe endometriosis that was diagnosed during the lap, and it had caused one of my tubes to be in really bad shape. That tube was removed...it was swollen and I've heard that it is not good to do IVF with a tube swollen with fluid...it can affect the IVF from what I hear. So it was very good to get that tube removed PRIOR to starting down the IVF road. Also, I had an HSG which showed open, normal tubes. But the lap revealed that the tube was not "normal", although it was open and dye could go through it. So HSG may not always diagnose tube problems. Hope that helps! Oh, and my lap experience was not bad at all. I did take a week off work, but by the second day I really felt like I could have gone back in. I didn't have any of the gas/shoulder pain that some people do.

I had one done just to rule anything out. I did have mild endo and a polyp and a cyst removed. Also, my left tube was blocked (we found this out through hsg previously) so while he was in there, the doctor cleaned it out. Our main problem is on DH's side (low acrosome reaction), but why go through that whole draining (financially, emotionally and spiritually) process before really knowing what you are dealing with?

I was very sore that night and the day after..could hardly move. The next few days felt like I had done way too many sit-ups and then after that I was okay. I can hardly see the scars anymore.

Hopefully if you decide to do this again, you will have a better experience.

Good Luck to you!

I have had 2 laps done. One in 2001 and my last one in Oct 08. Both were easily recovered from. Done on Thursdays and back to work on Monday. I think you really have to pick the right doctor to do a lap. It should be one that does them on a regular basis. Good luck in whatever you decide.

did you decide/have

Postby momoftwins » Tue Jan 13, 2009 1:06 pm

I did a lap before each of my 2 IVF cycles. I wanted to make sure everything was OK before I spent so much money on the IVF. I didn't want to have and HCG done so I opted to have the laps instead.
