FET Ladies..how many to thaw/transfer?

Postby twinklebug » Tue Oct 05, 2010 5:56 am

Dh and I are going to meet with our RE in November to discuss plans for a FET for what will hopefully be our third child. So I'm sure I'll get more info. about thawing at that appt, but wanted to ask all you ladies (since we are the real experts :*) first.

I have 3 snowbabies-not sure how they were frozen-but they were 6 day blasts when frozen. On my first IVF, I was lucky to put two in and get Pg with twins, but I know FETs are different. I believe the thaw rate at my clinic is something like 67%. But of course, i know that is just an average. I am wondering how many to thaw-all 3, or just two? Of course, I will put back any that survive the thaw...so dont want to that too many...but of course, I also would love for my cycle to be a success. I want to do the right thing for my embies..these decisions are tough!

Anyone have advice based on their own experiences or stories they want to share?

Me and my husband are doing our ET for the FET on the 18th or around that day. We are going to put back 2 and have 18 frozen.

I am doing a jan FET and putting back in 3. Ours were frozen 3 to straw ( not sure why RE did them that way). I did not get preggo with the fresh from that cycle...I also am changing RE's and they can not give me rates based on the fact that my embies were not made with their lab...

We are trying to decide the same thing. We are probably going to put back two (7 total). We would welcome twins but because of our loss we are scared. Our Re talked to us about putting just one back but with the cost DH is worried about how many times we can afford to do this. You are right the decision is so tough

Good Luck to you!

I've read that the newest studies show two things in your favor:

1) BETTER results for FET cycles than for fresh (53% success vs. 50% I think) (possibly because your body is in better condition to get pregnant, not having just been through a marathon of stimulations)

2) Batch cycle - this assumes that any embryos in a batch that contained good embryos that resulted in a live birth are all considered to be a better bet than the average embryo.

And if it doesn't work it is cheaper to try again than to raise triplets. Please, take it from a moron who transferred 4 (and luckily only got pregnant with twins) because I was trying to avoid the cost of FET! If only I'd thought of the cost of needed twin equipment, etc! Would have been so much cheaper to have them a couple of years apart!

Also if something goes wrong with your cycle (you get the flu, etc.) you won't have blown them all on one chance.

Good luck!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Oh good grief, it's you, Twinklebug!!! Hi!!!! So you already have twin equipment!!! :) I say more than before to go for just one, you are a proven incubator, mama!!!!!

Hi Worley! How are you? Thanks for the info on the embies from the same batch-I did not know that. Wow-you transferred 4 embies? I did not know that either lol  I love my twins, but am worried about the cost of having two sets (daycare, clothing, etc..). But of course due to my past IF, I am always worrying about the "what ifs" of the FET not working.. But I def. know I would not transfer 3-just in case! The twin pregnancy was pretty rough on my body, and I've got a couple years on last time..

Does anyone know, if you decide to thaw a certain number..say 2..before a FET...and none wind up making it, can you then ask your RE to thaw another for tranfer? Or is the whole cycle a bust? Not sure how that works..

This decision is so much harder for me than I thought it would be. When I look at my little ones, and realize that they were at one point embies just like my frosties, I get so concerned about my frosties and want to give them all the best chance to survive. But I also have to do what's best for the family that I have now. So it's a rough one! You really dont think about these decisions when you are freezing the extras during your fresh cycle, but it is a tough call!

I just went through my first FET cycle (BFN). I had 3 snowbabies (5 day blasts), thawed one and transferred one. In my fresh cycle I transferred 2 and ended up with DD. Hind sight, I would have transferred 2 and taken my chances with twins. My RE wouldn't consider transferring 2 because he said that frozen embryos have greater chances of splitting. Also, he didn't want to put 2 in because of my age, I'm 29. I'd say go for 2, as long as you are ok with the possibility of twins again. After looking at the stats through the CDC, frozen cycles aren't as successful as fresh cycles.
Good luck!

twinkle-I had my FET in August and we had 2, 6 day blasts. I would have an idea of how many you'd transfer, but try not to dwell too much on it yet...I know, hard to do. I had 3 transferred in my fresh cycle and had 1 baby from that, so the thought of transferring 2 frozen was not too concerning for me. I figured I'd be lucky to get 1 to stick. I remember hanging around for my thaw report. Both survived the thaw but at different percentages. So, you'll have that to consider as well. We transferred the 100% and the 80% blasts. We had a chemical pregnancy with that one, I think my lining was not great and I did get very sick during early implantation . Nikki also brings up a good point too. If they froze them all in the same straw, they'll have to defrost them all I believe. I hear that 2 per straw is pretty common. So, if you defrost 2 and they don't survive the thaw, you could have time to defrost the other one.

IVF is a crap shoot. You just never know, but you have to be ok with whatever decision you make so you don't have the second guesses..kwim? Personally, I'd go for the 2 for the same reasons babs gave.

Good luck to you!

When I went through my FET, I thawed all 4. One didn't make the thaw and one didn't make it to blast. They were frozen on day 3 and then thawed and grown to day 5 blasts. We put 2 back in and ended up with our twins.

I have two other friend who did the exact same thing and they both have twins for that cycle.

GOOD LUCK! I think that based on how good of a quality egg they were going into the freeze will determine what they will do.
