Possibly Moving to IVF

Postby parisxmas » Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:59 am

Hi Ladies!

Could someone give me the rundown of the IVF process? We've had 3 failed IUIs and I'm on a natural, unmedicated, cycle right now. If I don't get my BFP I'd like to move to IVF as I'm not getting any younger (I'm 33). I just wanted to get an idea of how an IVF cycle works.

I went through three IVF cycles and two different medial protocols – during first two I did what they call long lupron/gonal F and the last one was menopur/brevele.
Basically, in the beginning of your cycle (with lupron it’s actually 21st day of previous cycle) you start injecting yourself with two different kinds of meds – one to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs and the other one to prevent you from ovulating prematurely. The clinic will monitor the development of eggs thru blood and ultrasound and once the measurements are right, you’ll be instructed to stop you meds and take a trigger shot, which will induce your ovulation.
36 hrs after trigger, you’ll get your eggs retrieved under light anesthesia and your husband will provide his sample and that day is when the magic happens :)
Next day, you’ll get a call from the clinic informing you of how many of eggs got fertilized. You will be brought back for egg transfer either 2, 3 or 5 days past retrieval (that’s up to your dr to decide). Best graded embryos will be transferred thru catheter (procedure is very similar to IUI). Again, the number of embryos transferred will be discussed and decided with your doctor before you start your meds.

If you would come across any specific questions, I’ll be happy to answer. I feel like I know the process inside out now (unfortunately).

Good luck! :luck:

PP got it right...

depending on your protocol you will be on BCP and then Lupron. Then you will start stims ( usually 2 different kinds) in addition to taking pre natals and baby asprin, then you will have your retrival. That night you will start progesteron and estrogen. A few days later you have your transfer and then 2 weeks later is your blood test.

I have done 3 fresh cycles and 1 frozen. My protocol with the frozen was differemt and I was on different meds. Each dr has a diffrenet protocol and it also depends on what your issues are.
