Any of you IVF girls bleed during pregnancy??

Postby ravenaub » Wed Apr 13, 2011 6:08 am

I just wanted to make sure I'm not alone in this. The morning after my first beta, I started bleeding and was sure my pregnancy was over. It lasted a little more than a week and was similar to a period, but longer. During that time, my numbers continued to double and I was told not to worry. I was happy to see the bleeding GO. I finally relaxed a little into my pregnancy.

It left for about a week and then came back yesterday. I was instructed to come in for an u/s and they saw 1 gestational sac, 1 yolk sac, and one little baby with a :hb:. My RE told me not to be concerned unless it was heavier than a period or I passed any large clots. He said that there was no pooling of blood in my uterus and that my lining wasn't pulling away - all good signs. He also told me that 50% of IVF patients bleed and that most of them do not miscarry. There was no evidence of a hematoma or anything like that.

So, my question to you all is - Did any of you girls bleed in your IVF pregnancies without having a hematoma? Can you share your experience regardless of the outcome?

TIA!!

I bet that you do have a sch and the dr just could not pick it up....or that it could have just been bleeding from the intial implantation ( sometimes heavy)...I had a bleeding episode and they did not see the sch and then a week later they found it...

it is great that the baby is doing well...just take it easy for a bit.

hi there,

With my daughter i had dark brown spotting on and off for 4 and a 1/2 months and was told this was normal. i also had cramping too like a period and looking back on it now it was probably a threatened miscarriage as with my son i had nothing at all except some initial cramping straight after they put the embryo back. my girlfriend had what you had and was told by her doctor and u/s person that she had a 50% chance of the baby being ok. i dont want to scare you at all but i must be honest. if you arent having any cramping then that is a good sign. if its bright red blood accompanied by cramping then it will probably be a 50 50 chance. if its just brown like what i had then i think you'll be fine. i hope for all the best for you.

Thanks girls. The bleeding has gone back to brown spotting and my RE thinks it may be winding down. I had also heard that the chances of everything working out were 50/50. I just keep telling myself if this is a good pregnancy, it will stick.

I haven't had any cramping other than some twinges here and there that I am attributing to being 6 weeks pregnant - and have not cramped at all while bleeding. My lower back has ached some and I'm getting some weird pains in the tops of my legs, but this is my third baby and I think my body is letting me know that it knows what's going on.

No worries about scaring me. I have been terrified for two and a half weeks now. I just want to get as much info as I can and be prepared for whatever may be in store.

Thanks again!

Many many of the ladies I know who did IVF had at least one bleeding session. Some worse than others. Mine started with brown spotting shortly before 6 weeks. Thought it was caused by the ultrasound. 3 or 4 days later I had a big gush of red blood. Called RE, and they rushed me in for an ultrasound. All was fine, and they could not tell where it was coming from. It tapered down to brown and lasted a week. Nothing since then, and I am 24 weeks with twins now.

With my first IVF, I had some brown spotting that was probably implantation bleeding. That was all. I think bleeding is EXTREMELY common with IVF pregnancies.

Hi Raven,

I'm there with you right. I am starting to have a little bit of bleeding (red flecks mostly but seems like how things started last time) and pretty scared as well.

I think your scan is reassuring and I hope that things continue to look good for you.

I also had bleeding with both my IVF pregnancies and both ended in successful full term babies! (my identical twin boys and my daughter).

The pregnancy with my daughter was the scariest. On the day of my 1st u/s at 6w4d, literally seconds before my u/s - I started bleeding! and not brown, red, BRIGHT RED! I thought for sure, it was over. But sure enough, the baby looked great and had a strong :hb: . Nothing showed on the u/s as to why I was bleeding so we really didn't know why other than maybe it was implanting into a blood vessel. I continued to bleed for a couple of hours after that, dark red blood and clots too. It was sickening because I thought I was going to lose the baby. I took it easy the rest of the day and drank lots of water and eventually the bleeding just completely stopped. I was so relieved but still worried.

We went back for another u/s exactly a week later and the baby was growing strong and we saw the reason for the bleeding. A sub chorionic hemmorage. I never had bleeding after that one episode thankfully but I have heard of women bleeding for longer periods of time and the baby is fine. My daughter was born healthy at 38w6d.

I also spotted brown for about a week or so with my twin pregnancy. We also saw the same thing, a SCH. It resolved itself and my boys were born at 36 weeks, healthy.

What you are experiencing sounds similiar to what we all have been through here. Hang tight. Try to take it easy. I would abstain from any sex until you get past the bleeding stage and drink lots of water.

Congrats on your pregnancy! Good Luck

Thanks for all the responses, girls. I go back in for another u/s tomorrow. I'll be 7 weeks to the day. The bleeding is back to light brown spotting. DH and I have refrained from BDing. Of course, I live in constant fear that the bright red blood will make another comeback. I just keep telling myself that if this pregnancy is good, it will stick - bleeding or not. I've been taking everything day-by-day.

Cat - Hang in there girl. What a roller coaster. Big hugs to you and remember to breathe. Here for you. Keep me posted.

Hmmm....not sure why my post didn't show up.

Anyway, I was a bleeder during my entire first trimester with the twins. I had no complications with my pregnancy and carried the twins to just shy of 39 weeks! They are healthy, 16 month old monsters!

Its crazy to even think that bleeding would be "normal" in an IVF pregnancy, but thankfully there are a lot of women who are in the "norm" and they all carried healthy babies to term!

Congratulations on your pregnancy and seeing your little ones HB! What a wonderful feeling!
