Starting first IVF cycle and would LOVE advice!

Postby cheryldc » Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:37 pm

Today I start injections for my first IVF cycle!! I'm so excited and SO nervous! I'm going to be doing 225IU Bravelle and 75IU Menopur for 10-12 days (at some point they will add Ganirelix and I'll trigger with Lupron).
I would love any advice/tips/etc from ladies who have gone through IVF.
My mock embryo transfer went well and my pre-IVF evaluation ultrasound showed 8 follicles, although I have no idea if that means I can produce more than that many eggs, or if that's the max.
My ER will be about Sept 6 with embryo transfer around Sept 9-11. Anyone else on a similar schedule??
Thanks!! :)

Just wanted to say good luck on your cycle! I had a very similar protocol and dosage amount with my first IVF, which resulted in twins. I hope you get your :bfp: too. Everything goes really quickly once you start stims. Before you know it your retrieval and transfer will be done, and you'll be in the two week wait.

We have an Aug/September IVF thread on this forum if youd like to join. There are lots of supportive ladies who can help you with any ?s and we are all pretty close in schedules.

Cheryl- we are on track to have an FET on September 8, so we can wait together.

I don't have much advice. I had a few friends to share in the wait with me which really helped. This time I'm going it alone so that hopefully, we will get to surprise everyone.

Good luck! :luck:

Cupcake- Good luck with FET! From what I've read it is way more successful now than it used to be. Isn't it just amazing technology?!
I am very excited and SO hopeful that IVF works. I keep thinking about giving my father-in-law an u/s pic of baby for Christmas- he would be so thrilled. My parents, sister and BFF are the only ones who know (besides the TWW community LOL) that we're doing any IF treatments, let alone IVF!
I feel like my belly is going to get so swollen this cycle that everyone will think I'm pregnant already!!

Twinklebug- You were so right about it going fast. Can't believe I am already on my 4th day of injections!! :)
Question for you- you said your first IVF resulted in twins... My doc mentioned since I'm relatively young he would only want to transfer one embryo (if it's great quality), but the ultimate decision is up to me. I think this eSET (elective single embryo transfer) thing is all the rage at my clinic.
I'm guessing you transferred two? What are your thoughts on twins versus singleton. My RE really scared me about multiples during IUI, and they say how twins are much higher risk.
I'd love the perspective of someone who went through a twin pregnancy. My gut is to transfer two, but I have 6 IVF cycles and unlimited FETs in the shared risk/flat rate/100% refund program I'm in so maybe it makes more sense to just transfer one and take my chances?

I'm gonna give my input on 1 vs 2. Everyone is different but I prefer 2 for better chances. When we did our IVF I was 24 with PCOS. My RE looked for amazing results for us, mainly due to my age and the fact I already had 1 child that only took 5 months to conceive when I was 18/19.

He transfers 2 and that's for every patient. To his surprise, we got a singleton. He also found out during my cycle I have some form of egg factor as my eggs were not responding like a PCOS patient should .... by 5 days of stims they weren't responding at all. After they kicked up my stims we got a response though. We have 1 embryo remaining that we plan on using this next June or so.

Everyone in that clinic was shocked by our results. My RE called me a medical mystery lol. We are lucky to have 1 embryo left. Before we transferred to our OB he made the comment that he didn't know how well our chances would be with just 1 embryo, especially since we stuck 2 in and only got 1 with our IVF.

Aside from that I was like you and had an antral count of around 8-9. Was yours on each ovary or was that both together? Mine was on each is why I ask.

We ended up getting 14 at ER (my RE had said he barely looked for me to get 8-10), 7 were mature and they did ICSI on. Then the next day we had 6 growing. My RE does ET's on day 3 which is when we transferred 2 of the 6 and by day 6 we had the 1 embryo that was good enough quality to freeze. (All 4 of them made it to blasts though)

Everyone is completely different. There are people with bad quality eggs and have multiples and then people with perfect quality eggs who don't get pg at all. Luck of the draw I suppose  .

Wishing you all the best. We got pg on our first IVF/ICSI and our precious little miracle was born 3 1/2 weeks ago. :hb: Emotionally it's draining but try to stay positive and take it easy after ET. :)

We did 2 the first time too Cheryl and only had one baby. We are doing 2 again this time. I am slightly terrified of having twins since I have a one year old at home.

Our doc recommends 2 at a time, but you definitely run the risk of twins. The whole eSET protocol wasn't a big deal when we did our IVF. Now, I notice that it is written up on our RE's website.

You just have to go with what you feel comfortable with. If you're not in a big rush and you know you only want 1 at a time, then maybe 1 is what's best for you. If you're willing to roll the dice and want results faster, then I'd go for 2. That's just me.
