Egg Retrieval

Postby queenypink » Wed Dec 31, 2014 10:40 am

Good morning ladies - my hubby and I are slowly making our way down the IVF path with our orientation at the end of January. I'm starting to get nervous...

The one part that gives me MEGA anxiety is the egg retrieval. I live in Canada, so here (at least in BC) they will not put you under for the procedure. From what I've seen, most places in the states will put you under.

Ahhh!

Is there anyone who has gone through the procedure totally conscious? And if so... eeks, how was it? Bareable? I know they give you morphine and some local freezing, but man... I am already dreading just this one part...

I'm also from Canada. We did our first 3 cycles locally and they used conscious sedation. They have me midazolam (sedative like Valium) and Fentanyl (like morphine but fast acting). It was mildly painful for me, I'd say 5 out of 10 pain at the worst. For my last retrieval, I went to the US and they put me out which was great!! Thankfully they did because I got twice as many eggs and it would have taken a long time! Good luck!

Adventurer - thanks, that info was very helpful. Especially hearing that the pain for you only rated at a 5 - I was anticipating a 9! Mega congrats on your pregnancy! I'm curious, what prompted you to go to the states for your last retrieval?

I don't know if you went through the retrieval or not. I'm in the U.S. and they didn't out me under (gave me oxicodon and something else to relax). My pain was probably at a 8 but that's because my trigger shot didn't take and I think the doc was poking around in hopes to get an egg but my cycle was a bust. You get through it and if it makes you feel any better it's not a constant pain. Just when he pokes. Also as a reference I don't think the shots in the leg hurt that much so I can take some pain usually but retrieval was definitely a pain#8. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies - I survived the egg retrieval!

It actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. About an hour before the procedure, they gave me antibiotics, Tylenol, and an Ativan (thank god, though I don't think it did a darn thing). Then, right before the procedure they gave me Fentynol through IV.

I was as tense as a ... well, I can't think of a metaphor right now, but tense, shaking and about to cry. But it wasn't so bad... the procedure was only about 15 minutes (if that) and there were a ton of distractions - you can watch them sucking the follicles out on the screen right in front of you.

I barely felt anything on my right side... my left was painful only because the doctor said he had to go through scar tissue. Youchie.

So for anyone else in Canada that is awake for the procedure - it's not that bad! I actually enjoyed being awake for the procedure because it sorta -in a weird way - made me feel like I had some control in the situation. It was much much much much easier than the HSG. And the Fentynol... now that's some good stuff (other than giving you mega dry mouth and horrible breath - as my hubby was so kind to tell me).

Thanks Adv - I'm so happy. Even if this cycle doesn't work out (but God I pray it does!) I still feel like this experience was such a huge success giving us plenty of snowbabies.

My beta is Tuesday/Wednesday (depending on which clinic req I use) but I plan on testing tomorrow. I need to be prepared either way. Eeks - never been more scared to poas!
