AFOLIA Study

Postby Riteous » Fri Jan 16, 2015 4:09 pm

Hi Ladies,

It's been a while since I've been on here but DH and I have decided to try and qualify for the AFOLIA vs. Gonal-F study. We have to go to a new clinic so our new patient appointment is the 22nd.

Is there anyone still on here that did the study last year? Please share the good, the bad and the ugly as well as if there is anything that you wished you knew before starting.

Thanks so much!
Sara

Hi Sara! I'm on cycle #3 with the study at the same clinic in Tampa. My retrieval is Monday January 19th. We haven't had luck with the fresh transfers but we have 3 frozen embryos to use if cycle #3 doesn't work. My first cycle was probably the hardest as you just don't know what to expect and I was so nervous every step of the way. I've had a great experience with everyone at the clinic; love all the nurses, Seth the embryologist and Dr. Sanchez. Are they planning on ICSI for your cycle? We've had great fertilization rates most likely due to ICSI. Its very nice as you don't have to pay extra for ICSI with the trial. Let me know if you have any questions or PM if you want to call to talk. Best of luck to you!! Jeanine

Hi Jeanine - hope your retrieval went well this morning and your recuperating!!!

Yes, the study requires ICSI and I don't think I would do another IVF without ICSI as it wasn't recommended on our 1st cycle and we only ended up with 1 egg that fertilized. I think I read online the minimum AFC for the study is 10 in order to qualify so that has me a little nervous because I've had previous counts of 9, however my AFC on my IVF cycle was 11. I meet with Dr. Sanchez on Thursday for a new patient consult so I'm sure I'll find out more details then...

How did you respond to the drugs? Have you used the same for all 3 of your cycles? Just a little nervous that since it is a study can they alter the doses to ensure your ovaries are responding as they should? Again with my previous cycle I was on 300 Gonal-F and 150 Menopur doses...

Thanks so much for the reply!

Hi Sara!
Thank you! I'm a little sore but home recovering now. They retrieved 10 eggs, so hopefully our baby is in there. Since it is a clinical trial they have a set protocol on doses of FSH. Everyone starts on 225 of either Gonal-F or Afolia. On the 6th day you go in for e2 blood levels and ultrasound. Depending on how your responding they increase or decrease the Gonal-F or Afolia. All three cycles they upped me to the max level of 450. Also the drug you get for your first cycle, all subsequent cycles have to be on the same drug. Hope that helps you a little. I'm gonna PM you a couple of things. Best of luck and let me know how the consult goes and if you have any other questions.
