February/March 2015 IVF/FET

Postby Karen1111 » Mon Jan 26, 2015 7:32 am

Hi ladies!

Welcome to the February/March 2015 IVF/FET page. This is where those undergoing IVF/FET can meet others like them, chat about symptoms, etc.

A bit about me: most of my IVF history is in my signature, but I am heading into round #2 as soon as AF arrives (hopefully sometime next week). Last cycle's failure was a crushing blow, but I took a month off, went on a vacation, and am ready to start round 2. I have one frozen, but will be doing IVF because I have three cycles covered (regardless of whether it is IVF or FET, so we will use the insurance coverage for the more expensive!)

The December/January bored for IVF was amazing and many of those ladies are now pregnant. Hoping to get a good group for this time around because it was great to have the support!!

Hugs to all!

Hi! I will be doing my first IVF in mid March, so would love some company! Sorry you're first one didn't work.......here's hoping the second time is the charm Karen1111:)

I've been on BC for past week...and I am hating every second of it! I've already gained like 3 pounds, feel disgusting and bloated. I haven't take BC since I was like 18, we always used other forms of protection, so I forgot the side effects of it. I also switched REs so this IVF cycle is with a brand new doctor. So far-----this office is just as bad as the past one, but nothing I can do at this point. There are limited options near where I live/work.

Hi Hope! Nice to "meet" you. If you are on BCP now, how come your IVF won't be until mid-March? What's wrong with the new RE?

I am sorry you had three failed IUI's and how much the BCP sucks. How long will you be on it for?

Hey guys. Hope I can join. I start the IVF process at the beginning of March. Going on BC in February. We will be doing a delayed transfer, meaning we wil do the ER in March, fertilize the eggs, freezes them at day3 or 5 (not 100% sure on that). Then put them back in May. I have a high possibility for OHSS and my RE doesn't want to waste my best eggs in a fresh cycle because of that. I am a little worried about doing a freeze all because it seems to be a new thing but I won't have all of that hormone medication going through my body when they put the eggs back, so that makes me feel a little better. She assured me that the success rates would be the same for me with a frozen cycle than if I had a fresh cycle. Nervous about the whole process but excited at the possibility of finally having a child so I am ready to start!

Hi Mmmoore. First of all, I LOVE your picture. That is amazing. My RE has really positive things to say about frozen transfers. If we aren't successful on the next fresh cycle, we might do frozen the next time around.

Have you gotten your protocol and everything yet?

WalkInPair - that's so awesome that you will be doing your ET in the next 3 weeks! How exciting! I will be starting BCP as soon as AF arrives so I am hoping for a first week of March ER.

Ugh, don't get me started. LOL...I made an appt with the New RE, about 2 days before my period was slated to start in January (I knew the 3rd IUI had failed by that point, as I had NO symptoms whatsoever). Anyways, the doctor said February would be way too soon for IVF and to get me on his schedule, and he would need all my records tranferred, paperwork signed, etc, so he said we need to work towards a Mid-March IVF plan.

I will be on BC for 3 weeks, get my period AGAIN in February, and probably stay on BC another week and start Lupron, etc. I thought it was weird as well to be on Birth Control for so long, but doctor was not concerned.

My problem with all these REs is this: They never seem to have any time for you after you make that initial consultation meeting with them and they have roped you in. After that it's always the nurses or PAs doing all the work, monitoring etc. You rarely get opportunity to ask the doctor questions directly during a monitoring visit, because they are not there. They also made me come in and do bloodwork after I got my period in January (DAY 3 TESTING, THYROID, etc) and it's been a week and I have yet to hear from them about the results. I called them last week and they said "Oh, your Prolactin Level is unusually high, were you fasting when you came? And your thyroid is 3, which is normal, however for IVF we like it to be 2.5 or lower" so they made me come in again last Wednesday for more bloodwork, and I still have not heard back from them.

Is this normal? What have been your "Pre-IVF" preparations your Doctors have been doing? Unfortunately, I really don't have energy or time to search for a 3rd RE at this time, so I'm just going to have to go with this one and pray for the best.

Good luck! My RE actually mentioned that Frozen embryos may have even better quality, because you know they are strong to have survived that long.

How did you doctor know you have high risk of OHSS? I thought controlling the medication dosage would control this?

Hope84, I had the same problem (maybe it's not the problem; RE can be very busy on different clinic branches, more critical surgery appt etc). I met my RE for 2-3 times in my IVF cycle. Other times, nurse will do the monitoring, bloodwork or sometimes another RE (my RE's partner) do the ultrasounds.

I did asked my RE before I started my IVF who will be the physicians that I will be "working" with for the whole process. As I know there are 2 REs and 2 nurses i deal with most of the time. One or two times, I need to make the call when I did not heard back from them on the results and they will return the call on the same day.

The nurse is always the point-of-contact for any Q/A. And they are pretty responsive on returning calls, updating the instructions/test results on patient portal etc.

I usually throw a lot of questions to the nurse if I have doubts. Get the nurse to contact the RE or have the RE to call you back. I'm paying every penny out of pocket and I want to make sure I'm comfortable with the whole process.

mmmoore - I'm curious too how your RE know about the risk of OHSS when you're just started with BCP now? I thought it depends on how your body react to the stimulation's medication (injections). I got the know I was on the risk of OHSS on day 11 of stimulation when the blood work shown >4300 estradiol. Last min, RE changed my trigger shot (instead of using Ovidrel, I took lupron trigger shots) before the eggs retrieval. Lupron trigger will bring down the estradiol level but I have to freeze them all and do FET next cycle.

Hoping I can join in here.

My ttc history is in my signature, but basically I've had 7 failed IUI's and one loss, so we're moving on to our first (and hopefully ONLY) IVF cycle. I'm currently a combination of excited/devastated/terrified/hopeful. :omg:

My RE does IVF in cycle groups, so we are moving forward very quickly so that we could get in on the next group. It means several appointments in the next few weeks - which is a bit overwhelming - but otherwise we would not have been able to start anything until March. As of right now, we are estimated to do ER and transfer in late Feb/early March. We'll get our actual schedule next Tuesday, and the ridiculously organized part of me can't wait!!

With our IUI's and any other procedures, our RE has been very available for me. So far, it seems like the nurses are our contact for IVF, but they are both great and they are quick to go to the dr with any other questions we have, so I feel really comfortable.

I'm excited to "meet" you ladies and travel this road together! :D

Hey guys!

My ovaries are polycystic and my RE thinks that I am at a higher risk for OHSS. I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS but my numbers are close. My Day3 follicle count was high (15-20 on each ovary). So she thinks that a freeze all would be more beneficial. And I expressed my concerns about putting my embryos back in such a crazy state (with all the medication and stuff). So here we are.

I guess she thinks that with my high follicle count that my ovaries may become hyper stimulated even with monitoring? I don't know. Just going by what she says! :)

WalkInPair, so you are doing a freeze all too? (not by choice right?) How do you feel about it?

Hi ladies!

The RE "I am not getting enough personal attention" problem I think is everywhere. We go to one of the most highly regarded doctors in my city (Washington, DC) and it's STILL almost ZZERO face time with the doctor and basically impossible to get an appointment, which is so frustrating. The only time I really saw him was initial consult (which took 3 MONTHS to get), follow up consult for IVF (which I basically had to beg to get into) and then some of the monitoring mornings (but just depends which is the 3 doctors in the practice is on call). All other communication is with the nurse. So my ER and ET for my first cycle was with another doctor in the practice because my doctor was not on call that day. Sort of frustrating, but I totally trust my RE and I trust the people that work there. That's the most important part.

Here are some (unsolicited) thoughts I have after my first failed cycle:

1. Trust the RE and nurses. Honestly, they are there because they have done this many, many times before. Each monitoring appointment is scary (wait how many follicles? how big? what does it all mean?) They can't give you the answer to everything bc they are too busy, but it does seem to work out in the end.
2. It's SUCH an emotional roller coaster during the stims. One day you will feel great, the next you will be sure it doesn't work. Just try to remember tomorrow is a new day.
3. My nurse told me this the day I came in for Beta knowing cycle one had already failed (AF had already arrived) and she said: "Own your grief." I really liked that. She just meant to stop apologizing for being upset, let yourself cry and grieve. This is an UNBELIEVABLY hard process and so it's ok to be upset. That's why we are all here to support each other!!!

Anyway, if people have questions on stims/other stuff let me know!!

That is great advice Karen1111. How long were you on the injections for before egg retrieval? How many injections is it daily?

I give you so much credit for continuing to be so positive and willing to jump right into IVF#2. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for you when the first one failed. That is great advice your nurse gave you. Did the nurse/dr by any chance review the cycle with you, before starting IVF 2? I am just wondering if they are able to understand why the first one didn't work and if they are going to change your protocol for #2 to give you a chance.

We only have money for 1 IVF, as it is all Out of Pocket for us, so I am literally putting all my eggs in one basket (Friends episode reference for any fans LOL).

On a completely separate note, I just watched the Friends episode where Phoebe gets the ET from your brother/SIL eggs/sperm and I just laugh at that episode from a totally different perspective these days. Especially when she goes home to do a pregnancy test like 4 hours after the ET and says "Well, normally you can't tell this soon, but my body has always been way ahead of Western Medicine". :)

Hi Hope!

I was on stims for 13 days this cycle before my trigger shot. I took one injection a day for the first 8 days or so (at night only) and then starting on day 9 it was two injections a day - one in the morning and one at night. The RE really has no way of knowing why a cycle failed. I transfered a really solid embryo and the transfer went perfectly. It just did not implant :( So sadly, no answers for me.

I feel like getting right into the next cycle is the only thing that will keep me somewhat in control and that reduces my stress. Since it is your only IVF, will you be transferring two?
