First time IVF/ICSI March/April 2015 hoping for Twins

Postby IVFnewbie » Thu Jan 29, 2015 10:36 am

Hello Friends... I am new to this forum but am a silent watcher of this forum since 2012. Here is my journey details
    Me - 30
    Hubby - 33
    TTC - Since 2012-jan
    All reports came normal.
Diagnosed with unknoown male infertility - Oct 2013
Found that IVF/ICSI is only option in Oct - 2013
    Planning to start IVF/ICSI in March/April 2015
Me and my Hubby had so many up and downs disappointments through this journey. But we always together in this and we built a very strongest relationship . If we hadn't through this journey we wouldn't have known that how strong we are and how much we Care & Love each other.
I am looking for successful stories of IVF/ICSI for support. May be this sounds crazy but yes i am hoping for Twins. You all wonderful ladies already know that how expensive it is and how emotional and physical roller coaster it is. I know with twins complications are more. more attention more work but also more love we can get more hugs and more kisses... :)
Did anyone had the same feelings and hoped for twins and successfully had twins with ivf/icsi. if yes then how was your journey. I am soooo nervous and exited to here your stories. I am not a working woman we have only one income source. we don't want to go through it again again for this process. Which is why we are planning to transfer 2 embies.(if we would lucky to have at least 2 healthy embryos) . then what ever happens we will leave it to our fate.
We did not discuss with our RE yet. I don't know how the RE would react. How was your Re's reactions when you asked for Twin pregnancy.

if anyone else is going for ivf in the same time like me you are welcome. we all can share our experiences and support together.
Thank you so much dears... Baby dust to all.

Welcome to the IVF forum!

Something that gave me a lot of info and encouragement when we began the IVF process was looking at the sticky topics at the top of this IVF forum – especially the one called "Share your IVF success and stats here".

My DH and I had been through a rough 5 years of TTC when we finally went for IVF. Both of us felt the same way as you do about twins. Our RE's were understanding but also reminded us gently about the risks and how women are really built to carry just 1 baby. The embryologist at my RE's lab was very opinionated on this, but even after all our research, we felt like trying for twins was the right decision for us. So when it came time for our transfer, even though it was recommended to only transfer 1 embryo on day 5 (for our situation and age group), we asked to transfer 2. I was thankful that our RE let us make that decision. We'd been told that if we became pregnant, we had a 70-90% chance of having twins based on the stats from the previous year of transfers in my age group. In any case, we wanted to have the highest chance of bringing least 1 healthy baby home from the hospital. I was so worried about IVF not working or miscarrying and having to start over.

As you can see from my signature, we did get pregnant with twins! It was exciting and scary at the same time. I developed OHSS when I got my BFP because my HCG was so high. That was a pretty miserable week. When I went to my RE's office to get checked and evaluated for a drain of my abdomen, the embryologist saw me and said "this is why we only transfer 1 embryo!". Then when morning sickness struck, I had it really bad, which I believe had to do with the extra HCG from the twins.

We unfortunately lost one of the babies at 8 weeks. It was really sad for us. Part of me felt a little relieved as I was scared about how my body (5'3", 115lbs) would carry twins as I was already puking up pretty much everything I ate at that point. My DH had really gotten his heart set on twins and the specialness of that. We also don't know if we want to go through this again for future pregnancies, so it made us sad to think our baby would have an automatic sibling now that the twin was gone. They diagnosed it as vanishing twin syndrome, which unfortunately is common and happens in about 30% of twin pregnancies.

All that said, I am SO glad we transferred 2 and took the huge "risk" of twins. I would've been absolutely devastated had the IVF not worked at that point or if I had miscarried the entire pregnancy. I knew going into it that not all twin pregnancies make it to twin births.

Anyway, I hope I didn't discourage you at all. I just wanted to give you all the info and experience I've had so far. It's so hard when you're googling "risks of twin pregnancies" to get an idea of if it's really what you want or not. I'd always wanted to hear from people with some kind of experience in that department (even though mine is super limited).

I'll be following your story along and hoping for a healthy baby or babies in your near future! :)

We didn't do PGD or PGS. I think that's more commonly done when there's a history of recurrent miscarriage, advanced maternal age, or a particular genetic issue that the parents have a high chance of passing down to the embryos. None of those applied to us at the time so we didn't do it.

Hopefully your RE is understanding and open-minded about the intention to have twins!

Yeah, I hope my RE Listens to me. I heard that PGD Test will help to choose implantation guarantee embryos. So am considering this option to make sure that both embryos would stick. we don't have any genetically disorders history though.
Thank you so much again for your reply.

Postby Adventurer » Sat Jan 31, 2015 12:52 pm

Hi ivfnewbie! I did PGS on my 1st and 4th cycles. #1 was a disaster because embryologist didn't know what she was doing. I got 3 no results out of 4! On top of that, she didn't even know how to interpret results and I was wrongly told that no result meant severely abnormal. Ugh. So make sure if you do PGS that your embryologist does enough of them to keep their skills up.

At your age unless you or your partner have a genetic disease (or are a carrier) there is no need for PGS. At your age with the right protocol, 1 in 2 of your eggs should be chromosomally normal. I did it because I'm 40 and don't have much time left on my biological clock. PGS saves you time and *maybe* money by putting back known normal embryos thus increasing your chances of a successful implantation. But at your age, your best quality embryos are more likely to be normal than not so even without PGD, the embryologist would probably choose the normal ones to put back anyway. At your age, PGS is mainly for multiple unexplained IVF failures (assuming you are at a good clinic).

Good luck and ask lots of questions when you meet your RE.

Hi Adventurer, thank you so much for the information. we have no known genetical desorders. i will surely ask my RE about necessity of PGD. And its looks like its better not to mess with my embryos. In the beginning i really did not like the PGD testing or other because puncturing the embryo and taking out a cell it bothered me little bit. but when i read some stories about PGD testing so many members said that it will ensure the implantation and abnormalities. i had so many doubts about IVF at that time. so i thought ok, i should do the test regardless of genetical history. So i will discuss widely with my RE about PGD tesing.

we are going to Shady grove fertility center its a big center in our area. Yes am also considering the cost of the test if its too much pricy and if we don't need the test necessarily then we would not do it.

I have no words to say about your IVF journey. how did you cope with these many rounds. its giving me so much strength to take any out comes in the near future for me.
I am very happy to see your BFP. many many Congratulations to you. have a happy and healthy 183 days... :)

DH and I will be starting ivf at the end of this month. Starting shots when AF starts. RE nurse says I'll be on Bravelle and menapure. We are doing genetic testing so it will delay us until AF comes March... Estrogen and progesterone supplementation and then embryo transfer hopefully by last week of March/first week of April. All embryos will be frozen due to the genetic testing. I have heard good things about FET. I'm excited. We are paying out of pocket but are so so grateful that between his parents and mine, we have it covered. To be able to go into this process not worried about how to afford it, is priceless. Hopefully less stress will mean good things for us. We aren't sure if we are going to transfer 1 or 2. I guess it all depends on what we end up with after all is said and done.

Good luck everyone! So thankful for this board and for all of the stories, support, and encouragement! I can't believe we even have to do this but just when I think I'm alone in this process, I come here and see so many of us banding together and fighting strong!

Baby dust to all of you!!

Hi IVFnewbie and LynneFas

I am also new to IVF and starting it on 1 April. I start BC next week when AF arrives. Just had bloodwork done and then need to do some more tests next week before getting my protocol.
I am not adverse to twins, as we're a bit older having twins would be amazing to make a complete family quickly....but of course there are higher risks etc. I'd also be overjoyed with just one.
Would be great to keep in touch and share our experience, as its all rather daunting at the moment.

Sending you lots of luck and babydust
TTC since Sept 2013
Me: 37 with oldish eggs based on AMH and FSH blood tests
DH: 41 with low sperm count/motility/morphology. Grade 3 Variocele diagnosed & removed in Oct 2014, now reduced but not gone.

July 2015 - FSH reduced to 8.9 but diagnosed with Robertsonian balanced translocation (13,14).
IVF #2 August 2015: Suprefact and Gonal f. ER 16 August (9 eggs), 2 embryos tested with PGD, both abnormal

We decided to do PGD since DH has severely low morphology. I know that doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things and my RE says that with ICSI there will likely be completely normal fertilization. Something in me tells me that going through all of this, knowing that the RE we are going to is ranked in the top 10 of all of NY state, paying out of pocket for everything, we just feel like why are we going to go through all of this without knowing for sure (as sure as we can be) that everything will be genetically normal?

To each his own - for sure! I know there are risks with the biopsies... I don't know why - but my gut tells me that ending up with genetically tested, genetically normal embryos will increase our chances of implantation and successful pregnancy. I couldn't imagine going through this egg retrieval process more than once. Not only can I not imagine it, I simply cannot afford it - still in disbelief that we are able to do this at all!!!

Good luck to you..

Hi Lynnefas, how r u doing hon!! Thats good decision on PGD. It will clear all the fog!! sorry for insurance is not covering.. mine covers if any medical conditions meet like recurrent miscarriages or history of genetical disorder. nothing is applies to me. so it would not covered by my insurance. and my RE told strictly no PGD!!
All the best!! lots of Baby dust!!
