Did you "shop around" for your IVF meds?

Postby mmmoore » Wed Mar 04, 2015 12:32 pm

Hey girls!

Pharmacy called me today so I can get my meds for my IVF cycle starting at the end of this month. DH thinks we should shop around. I think we should just deal with the pharmacy that the doctor thinks is the right one. What should we do? Did anyone shop around to find the best price?

Thanks!

Hi mmmoore, good luck on your cycle! I did not shop around. My insurance had a preferred pharmacy so I used them. If I didn't, then my re had someone in his office who tried to get the best deal for us. Hth.

The first time around, we didn't price compare, just went with the one pharmacy our IVF coordinator recommended. This time, we were told there were 2 different pharmacies that our clinic has had a good relationship with, and we did call both to price compare. The difference is nearly $800, and because we're paying out of pocket that's a big deal. In addition, one pharmacy (the cheaper one!) works with the manufacturer discount program First Steps, and the other pharmacy doesn't. We haven't heard exact figures yet, but we're expecting a few hundred more dollars off. The hour spent price comparing was really worth it in our case. (When are you ever going to make $800 an hour?!)

Thanks for the advice! MidwestGirl $800 is a lot of money! It might be worth to shop around! Just have to hurry so I can make sure they are here on time!!

Oh, interesting thread, and I was thinking the same thing. Mmmoore - where do you live again?

I'm in Canada - and, EVERYTHING is out of pocket. I think our options are either getting meds straight from the fertility clinic (of course they prefer this) or going through a pharmacy, but without coverage, I'm not sure there will be a difference.
