The dreaded Progesterone Oil Injections

Postby Kim82 » Sun Mar 22, 2015 2:35 pm

Hi Ladies -

Wanted to see if anyone out there has any good tips for the dreadded POI's. I've been doing them off and on for quite awhile now and for some reason this time around i'm bruising badly and getting "knots" which are quite painful.

I've tried heating pad, massaging, moving around like a crazy lady after and holding the progesterone prior to warm it up.

I'm calling my RE in the morning, but wanted to see if anyone has any tips!

I'd recommend doing them all in the butt muscles rather than the thigh -- I always found thighs hurt for longer. Also, when you talk to your RE, ask for a prescription for vaginal progesterone instead. It's equally effective and although it's goopy and you'll have to wear a liner because it leaks out all day long, it's not painful. The other down-side is it's pretty expensive, like $600 for a month instead of $120 for the PIO.

Thanks for the advice. My RE didn't ever mention the thigh and i've done all of them in my bum. It honestly hurts to walk, so I'm hoping I don't have a case of cellulitis. They thought I was getting it last round, hoping we just hit a bad spot. My RE office was hoping I'd make it to the first ultrasound on PIO's and then transfer to vaginal. I've got the Crinone ready to go when they let me know I can make the switch. Fingers crossed this cycle works... not sure how much more my bum can take!

If you are still on the PIO shots try icing the area for 5 minutes before. Make sure you are doing it up high and toward the outside of the hip/butt ( like in the area of where the outside upper corner of your jeans pocket would be. When you do it in the belly of the muscle or the thigh it hurts more. Then try a heating pad right after for 10 mins or massage it real good. I had to do this for a while so became a pro ;) Good luck with your results!

Hi All!

It's been three weeks since my FET and I've been doing Progesterone oil injections since a couple weeks before my transfer. It was okay at first, but then got progressively more painful until recently.

Recently I started using a tight elastic belt around my hips/butt, just below the area I'm supposed to inject (lower hip above my butt). The belt pushes my fat up, so that when I inject, I'm not tense and stabbing into muscle or a thin area. Using the belt has helped so much! I also ice for 20 seconds right before the injection.

Best of luck to all of you! Lots of love and baby dust.

Ladies- I appreciate all the thoughts. I moved the injections up and a little more out (as suggested by Mandy) and I've had 3 VERY successful nights! (minimal pain and no big knot in the morning!) This is why I LOVE this site and the women that grace it.

Karen - So sorry about not joining February/March - life took some turns (my grandfather is very ill), work has been stressful and I just felt a little overwhelmed in life. I decided it would be best to do this round without as much support (I always have this burning desire to check this site every few hours when i'm active!) My test date is Tuesday morning... but I cheated today and got a BFP with a FRER (it states 2-3 weeks pregnant). WOW... of course i'm excited but I know I need to remain cautious so that if history repeats itself i'm not devastated (although I know it will be heartbreaking no matter what). So excited for your FET... i've got a good feeling for you!

Baby dust and wishing BFP's for everyone! :)

Congrats!!! All the tips above are good. I've had one successful pregnancy, which started as an FET. I did PIO for about 10 weeks, if I recall. It just hurts more as it builds up and your butt gets increasingly lumpy and bruised, with fewer clear areas to inject as time passes. I would feel around for a less tender area and tell my DH to do it there. Im doing another FET cycle now, and a new nurse advised holding the skin taut when injecting rather than grabbing a bunch of skin to shoot into. That has helped a bit, but it's just staring to accumulate and hurt more, ahh. Also, they can switch the type of oil the progesterone is in, for example, change from ethyl oleate to sesame oil. You may do better on a different type. Good luck and hh9m!!!
