How long is the IVF process?

Postby Jean789 » Thu May 21, 2015 5:34 pm

Hi Ladies. I've only just begun looking into IVF and was wondering how long the process takes from start to your BFP?

My husband and I have unexplained fertility. I am 29 and he is 31. We have had 5 failed IUIs now (with good numbers on both sides) but we are getting frustrated.

What made you ultimately decide to go to IVF? Thanks girls

We also did quite a few IUI's and since like us you have "unexplained infertility" (terrible diagnoses for a type A person like myself) it really depends on when you want to make the change. I think another big factor is an insurance/financial one as IVF is much more expensive than IUI's. We were fortunate enough that our insurance covered all IUI's and up to 3 rounds of IVF, including prescriptions. At least at my RE office there were quite a few additional tests you had to run to be IVF eligible (a whole lot of blood work for thing I knew neither of us had (HIV and many other STD's)). Once we made the decision we wanted to move to IVF we had to do a consultation, wait for my next AF to arrive in which you have to get a scan to make sure everything is calm. Then I got the official protocol (they somewhat knew it before and I had already had all medicines delivered). My RE doesn't do the BC thing unless you don't have steady periods... but MANY do based on my readings. After that it went quite quickly (all within the next month and a half). We decided to do egg retrieval and transfer in the same cycle (depends on different factors if this can happen or not)

I would suggest arranging a consult with your RE to see what their thoughts are and to ask about odds for IUI vs. IVF, cost, insurance coverage (they will typically call for you to see what's covered exactly) and any other questions that you can think of!

Best of Luck... baby dust to you!

Thank you so much for the response Kim! We have an appt scheduled in early June to discuss our options.

Unfortunately ALL infertility is out of pocket for us. I'm exactly as you described yourself- type A! That's why this has been so hard on me. If I want something- I make it happen. This has been so difficult to deal with for that reason. Nothing I'm doing is working!

Jean

Best of luck to you. I know the feeling and even tried an unconventional thing by going gluten free when IVF continued to result in bfn results. Happy to say that either we got lucky this time or the gluten free worked. It hasn't been an easy process, but it know in the end it will surely be worth it! Best of luck and baby dust to you!!

hi. ive also recently started and the process time varies. the time particularly depends on the protocol chosen for you to stimulate your ovaries. there are short protocols and long protocols. short protocols are often more popular as a starting point because they are quicker. depending on your clinic you might have some admin tasks and then you start your ivf cycle on day one of your period. if it all goes perfectly to plan you woul

Depending on your clinic you might have some admin tasks and then you start your ivf cycle on day one of your period. if it all goes perfectly to plan you would have a BFP within 4-5 weeks. for longer protocols it will take around 6-7 weeks or more depending on your response to the medications. That's the ideal scenario if IVF works first time!

Hello - I can also share our experiences with you.

We also had 5 failed IUI's. We decided to go with IVF because the chances were so much greater with IVF, and we would rather put our money towards better odds.

I started with about 17 days of the birth control pill, and then moved on to 12 days of injections/cycle monitoring. On the 13th day I had my trigger and the next day we had our egg retrieval. Five days after the retrieval we had our embryo transfer. Then, the dreaded TWW.

So, for us, from beginning to end, Birth control pills to BFP it was about 7 weeks, which included our TWW.

Ours was out of pocket too... but so worth it :)

Thank you for the responses! If anyone else would like to add I very much appreciate your time.

Queenypink- can I ask how old you and your partner are? I am 29 and my husband is 31.

Did ivf work for you the first time? That is also another concern. Do we pay for one cycle or the multiple cycle with discount if more are needed (yet if it works first time we've overpaid by a lot lol)

I'm 31 and my hubby is 35. This was our first IVF cycle and it worked for us! We were able to collect/freeze more embryos, so if this one didn't work, we'd have more opportunities for a frozen cycle which is a portion of the expense compared to the whole fresh IVF cycle. With a frozen cycle I think we would be looking at around 2 grand or so all in, compared to the fresh it was almost 15 (with everything - meds, embryo freezing, ect.).
