Anybody starting the IVF process in September?

Postby BeingAnAdultSucks » Thu Jul 30, 2015 7:29 pm

I haven't received my protocol yet, but my doc wants me to start birth control this cycle and start injections in September. We're doing ICSI, as my husbands count and quality are terrible. My numbers are great (I'm only 32), so we've been given about an estimated 55% chance of success.

This is such a strange position to be in, and I imagine it will only get weirder the further down the rabbit hole we go, so company is appreciated!

Hey!

I was researching IVF forums for a few weeks now and have been so hesitant to actually join the site. My husband and I haven't yet started IVF but we are on our way. I am 30 years old and he just turned 32. We have been TTC for almost 13 months with NO success whatsover - I have never even gotten a positive pregnancy test. For the longest time I felt like something was wrong and always had the fear that I couldn't get pregnant, but everyone thought I was crazy. Well here we are now... sad to say, I was right. Hubby's SA came back fine but has some abnormal shape. Both my tubes are completely blocked, my AMH is 1.73 ("low" to "normal"), and I have what could potentially be a polyp on my uterus. So, just last week, our doctor pretty much said that IVF is our only option. They asked for my husband to go for another SA and I have to go to go for a uterus saline ultrasound to see what's going on with the "polyp." If all goes well we will be moving right along to IVF. I am so nervous and excited.

How long have you been TTC?

And I know that 13 months doesn't seem long to TTC before seeking help, but my husband and I have had a total of 10 years of unprotected intercourse and never had an "oopsie" moment..

Hey, thanks for responding, TTC! We haven't prevented for 3 years, half of that actual trying (temping, charting, etc). After the first year we sorta knew something was up, and DH's first SA confirmed it, but you know how it is- they always want to test again, just to make sure. And all our doc appointments were MONTHS apart. I know IVF is going to suck, but the forward progress is an intoxicating joy compared to two years of waiting for test result after test result! It sounds like you know *exactly* what I'm talking about.

In all honesty, there was this study the clinic asked us to participate in. They said, enthusiastically, that in 30% of cases, sperm count DOUBLED!

If you look in my signature, you'll see DHs sperm count is only half of one million. That's insane, right? So I clarified this with the doc: "So you're telling me that if we just put off conception for eight more months, there's a 30% chance my husband might produce approximately 1/10th of the minimum count required to attempt IUI?! That IS exciting!"

She understood sarcasm, and agreed it might not be the way to go. Can't help but wonder if someone's bonus was tied to recruitment. It was an important lesson in ADVOCATING for yourself. These folks are a business, so read everything you can get your hands on, and ask questions! That's what makes this site so great. The collection of unique experiences and information helps you make informed choices. I hope your tests aren't spread out over months, and that they get you on a path to a BFP. :)

I am really not sure if I fit in here, but we are planning to start (continue??) the IVF process in September.

I am 37 (38 next month), and my husband is 39. No fertility issues at all, but I was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks after we started trying for a baby back in early 2013. We decided to harvest eggs and freeze some embryos before I started chemo, since it was unlikely I would be able to get pregnant afterwards, with the damage from the chemo on my ovaries. We have 8 frozen embryos, and are going to do PGD to look for the BRCA1 mutation I carry, so we don't pass that along. I get the go-ahead from my oncologist next Thursday (2 years after stopping chemo). The plan is to implant two embryos, and cross our fingers for twins. I am willing to give it two tries, because I need to get my ovaries out before I am 40 (another BRCA1 issue), and I am not willing to spend a billion dollars trying to have a baby. If things work, awesome. If not.......we will be OK. I can have a fabulous life either way.

I am not someone who would have ever pursued fertility meds, etc if we could not conceive on our own, so I feel very awkward on a fertility board.......but we *are* doing IVF and I *would* like to connect with other people dealing with similar meds and protocols and etc, etc. I haven't been able to find an active IVF board on any of the cancer websites I have perused, so I am hoping to check in here every so often. We shall see. I am a bit worried about offending others, since I don't have an infertility history and definitely don't have the same mindset/emotional background. If there is another site you think I may fit into better, I would be happy to check it out. Otherwise.....I will lurk and read and possibly post a bit...
I am 38/husband is 39. No fertility issues whatsoever (that we know of)

8 frozen embryos from 5/13, frozen the day before I started chemo for BRCA1 breast cancer
Embryos thawed 10/27/15---2 survived to blastocyst: Graded 6AA and 5AA
One embryo with chromosome issues; one female embryo with BRCA mutation

One more attempt to get eggs: aggressive retrieval planned with Estrace, Clomid, Follistim, Menopur, Ganirelix/Cetrotide, then HCG trigger.

Hi Alyca! Welcome!

Everybody's different, on here. There are some ladies who want to be mothers more than anything in this world, and have spent truckloads of money and a decade of heartbreak and miscarriages trying to make it happen. On the other side of the spectrum are the people like me, who basically lurk around and stalk people. I don't personally struggle with any fertility issues. We're pursuing IVF because my husband's sperm are terrible, and there are like... 3 of them.

The truth is, if we weren't doing well financially- if this weren't something that we could afford outright without going into debt- we would not have pursued it. We want a child, but we're also very aware that a child-free life has its own perks. If this doesn't work, I'm comfortable closing that chapter and focusing on spoiling the heck out of my brother's kids instead. BUT, in the meantime, this is an awkward process that friends and family don't really want to talk about, so it's really nice to have this forum!

Hey there,

I've never posted to one of these forums before even though I've been reading them for years. I guess I'm finally seeing starting to see a little light at the end of a very long dark tunnel, so thought I might introduce myself and find some other individuals going through similar experiences.

So, my hubby (40 yo.) and I (37 yo.) have been TTC since shortly after we got married 7 years ago, with not a glimmer of hope. After trying for 2 years we finally went and saw a fertility specialist who ran a battery of tests on both of us and confirmed my suspicions... He was fine other than a slight problem with motility, but both of my tubes were 90-95% blocked. He gave us a 2% chance of conceiving naturally, and recommended IVF. Which, would have been fine if we were well off, but unfortunately that was not the case, so we put TTC on the back burner for the next 5 years while we started to save up.

Well, we finally saved up enough to give this IVF process a try, and started on Clomid yesterday, and are starting the injections tomorrow.

I'm so excited and nervous at the same time, while trying to keep myself thinking positively, but also trying not to get too excited where I might just be setting myself up for another huge disappointment. Balancing all these emotions gets so hard sometimes!

Going in on Wednesday for another US to see how eggs are progressing and see if injectables need to be continued...

Your prayers and words of encouragement would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I got the OK from my oncologist, so we are headed to our fertility clinic on the 22nd and will see what the next step is. I have a feeling it is 'give us all your money'...... I was really lucky in the egg retrieval/embryo making part of things a few years ago. There is a program through Walgreens that pays for the fertility meds for women who are making embryos for IVF because of a cancer diagnosis. We still had to pay the $10k for everything else, but it was nice to have *some* assistance. I don't think they help on this end of things, though, so we are on our own now.

Hi everyone,

I am in the middle of my first IVF cycle. I was doing really well until today -- seems like the hormones finally hit me! Anyways, as great as my doctor is, the nurse who calls me with results barely explains anything. I need some reassurance, and who better to turn to than all of you!

I am 30 years old with unexplained infertility. I have a high egg reserve, and seem to be producing all the hormones necessary. My period has always been like clockwork.

At my baseline, I had over 20 follicles between both ovaries. My doctor actually lowered my dose of Gonal to 187.5. Yesterday, I went for an ultrasound and estradiol blood work at day 7 of stimulation. My estradiol was at 397 and I only had 4 measurable follicles on ultrasound. The nurse called to say the doctor wants me to up my Gonal to 300 for two days and I am supposed to go in for ultrasound/bloodwork again tomorrow.

I am worried I am not responding well. Is 4 really bad? Is it likely more will develop or only that these 4 will get bigger? I am overwhelmed and discouraged -- two emotions that I know are not good for my body. Any insight would be so appreciated.

I hope all of you are having success and taking care of yourselves.

Hi Margot,

Your estradiol level does seem awfully low for day 7. It sounds like your doc underestimated the amount of stimulation you would need, but is taking steps to correct it! There's still time. People usually stim between 8 and 12 days, so if you go the 12 days on an adjusted protocol, there's a good chance you'll catch up! FX'd the other 16 follicles get the memo and catch up!

Also, this thread didn't really take off- most of us in the middle of our cycles are over on a different thread called "Aug stims, September retrieval"- you might be able to get more/better insight from the ladies over there, too- this is only my first IVF cycle, so I'm not exactly a pro. ;)

Hang in there!

Hello All!
Started my BCP today. Meds scheduled to start 10/5 retrieval tentivly on 10/28. Guessing it will be early due to previous meds for IUI. Infertility due to DH. We are traveling out of state because my best friend is head of nursing for RE Dr. Blessing for sure! TTC for over 4 years with 2 failed IUIs. DH is really excited to start this process. I am nervous and excited don't know how he will take it if it doesn't work.
Alyca- my mom just got diagnosis with breast cancer. Kudos to you for fighting that nightmare and still have having the strength to deal with this. Life's struggles are real and hopefully this is an easy stressfree process for you. I have zero infertility it is my husband. You do fit in here because regardless there is a factor that brought you here. Everyone needs support and has questions. It is easier to share it with People who are going through it at the same time.
Beinganadultsucks- we are doing icsi too.
Good luck to everyone! Hoping that we all picked the right RE and we get BFP!!!

Wram115! HI again! Happy to see a familiar face (or username :-)).

And hello to everyone else!

I joined the site a few months ago and spent some time posting in June and the beginning of July on the IUI boards. Due to a cyst and some other complications we basically missed July and August cycles which was extremely frustrating. I couldn't bear to visit the site and see everyone else posting updates when I had absolutely nothing to contribute. Despite only going through one true IUI cycle (3 months of clomid), we decided to move onto IVF. I've been seeing my specialist since January, and it just seemed like so much time was passing with so few attempts. I wanted to get to whatever had the best chance of working ASAP. So today I'm on Day 5 of injections (gonal-f and menopur). Side effects were ROUGH yesterday - I basically felt terribly hungover despite not having a drop of alcohol. Feeling better today.

Remaining hopeful, and happy to be back here with you ladies.
TTC our 1st since 2013
Me - 29, no known issues
DH - 31, low morphology

Hi there, this is my first post on this forum. Myself (37) and my partner (38) have been TTC for almost 4 years. We have had 2 ectopics in that time which resulted in the loss of one tube. Tests show my remaining tube is patent but not fantastic and my partner has no issues. We've had no luck for the past 15 months and at our age got fed up of waiting and hoping. We have started the IVF process and I gave myself my first injection this morning. Now I'm just waiting to see if I turn into a crazy psychopath. It would be great to catch up with people at the same or similar stages. I already have a 16 year old son from a previous relationship.
