FET:transfer of 2 embryos-Increases or cuts chance of pregn?

Postby Alicja78 » Wed Jan 11, 2017 4:45 am

Hi ladies. I have a question in regards to your thoughts on FET - transferring TWO embryos vs. one. Which of you had 2 embryos transferred during FET - and did any of them implant, resulted in pregnancy, or failed?

Recently my friends forwarded an article to me, which said the recent study showed that '...Using TWO embryos for IVF could cut the chance of having a baby by 25% because the womb may reject them if one is of poor quality' - a study of almost 1500 embryos was carried out at Nurture Fertility clinic in Nottingham, UK.

From my own experience: in 2014 - FET, we had 2 embryos transferred - none of them implanted.
2016 - again, FET - 2 embryos transferred - none of them implanted (thankfully, we have a wonderful 1-year old son from the same fresh cycle).

This year we'll be undergoing another FET (still have 3 frozen embryos) and was thinking about transferring 2 of them. But after reading about this study, I'm contemplating having just 1 transferred (since we already failed twice, after 2-embryo transfers).

Which of you had 2 embryos transferred during FET - and did they implant? And 2nd question, if it's not too much to ask, how old were you at the time of transfer? (I'll be 39 by the time of my next FET). Thank you for your help and good luck!

From my experience, I have not had success after transferring 2 embryos. But once I had my embryos genetically tested and transferred one, I got pregnant both times.
I think it depends on your age whether you should transfer 2 or not. If you are 35+ I think transferring 2 would be ideal

I'm about to have 2 embryos implanted on Friday. I am 45, and we did egg banking so these eggs were frozen (not embryos) and then thawed and fertilized and will be transferred at 3 days (unless I get a call today that they feel 2 day would be better). I was 44 when the eggs were frozen. Honestly I would have probably implanted more if we had them because the chance of them all being good at my age is slim. That's an interesting study, my RE didn't mention anything about that and encouraged us to implant more because of my age. I've read many, too many to be honest lol, stories over the past 3 years of women implanting more than one and only one taking and being successful with the one. So, I'm sure there's some validity to that study, but I'm not sure I would put too much thought into it.

If you are 39 now, how old were you when the embryos were frozen? You're still young and if you can handle it financially, and since you have already had previous cycles transferring two, you can always opt to transfer one at a time and see how it goes. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that this next cycle is successful for you!!
3 early losses (natural bfps)
IUI #1-3 - BFN
IVF #1 - transferred 2 3-day embryos - BFN
IVF #2 - converted to IUI - BFP! - MC at 5 weeks
IVF #3 - 1 hatching 5 day blast transferred - 4 frosties
5dp5dt bfp :D
Beta #1 10dp5dt = 264
Beta #2 12dp5dt = 699

KeepTrying15, I was 37 when the embryos were frozen (the same cycle that resulted in my son being born).
I was 36 when I had my 1st IVF, and then FET (both fresh & frozen cycles failed, but in all honesty, I didn't even lead a healthy lifestyle then, so that might've played a part, who knows).
Gosh, now after reading different replies, I really have no idea what to do! :-D Transfer 1 or 2 :-P But because two 2-embryo transfers failed in the past, I think I might go with just one this time :-/

I wish you best of luck with your transfer, I do hope it will be successful!

Alicja,
I have had 2 transfers....the first was 2 embryo, the second was 1. The first transfer of 2 embryos didn't take at all, but I think the quality was poor. The second transfer of 1 embryo took, but was a higher quality embryo. Unfortunately I miscarried that baby in the first trimester. Now I'm about to have another transfer soon, with 2 embryos again. All the stats my doc has given me is concurrent with 70-80% chance that one of the 2 embryos will take, and about 40% chance that both could take. My doc has never implied that transferring 2 embryos could *decrease* my chances, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my embryo quality, past history, etc. I'm 33.
TTC since 2014.
Unexplained Infertility
1 IUI
2 Egg retrievals and Embryo transfers

Crossing our fingers that third time's a charm in March '17!
