IVF success for 38+

Mon Feb 27, 2017 4:45 pm

I'm scheduled for IVF the end of march. The SART success rates aren't very encouraging! How many of you have had successful IVF at 38 or older?

Great news and I wish you good luck. Look into pgs ngs, it usually increases chances of conceiving, particularly if a woman is 35 and older x

Hi

I too am 38 and hoping to start ivf shortly. I have my initial scan next Wednesday. How far along have you got with the process? Are you taking any supplements or doing any special diet etc?

I just turned 41 two weeks ago and my egg retrieval is tomorrow. I'm very hopeful as my hormone levels are good and I have a lot of large follicles on both sides. I'm trying to be realistic though too and tell myself that it may not work so that I'm not crushed with disappointment if it doesn't... but I can't help being hopeful and feeling positive :). I will let you know how it goes. As someone else mentioned above, as long as your fertility health checks out, your chances are pretty decent. My doctor is guessing that my chances of conceiving are about 40%, I think this is great.

Good luck!

Panda girl
40% chance is great! You must be feeling optimistic. Do you mind me asking how many antral follicles did you have at the start and how many grew?
I had an afc about 3 months ago which was around 15 which I thought was OK. Don't know my fsh or amh yet. What was your protocol?
All the best for EC, wishing you lots of luck. Sounds like you have a great chance.

I'm still on birth control waiting on call from RE to start follistim. Retrieval should be around the 28th. I'm feeling positive about it just impatient to get started!

Well, the egg retrieval went alright. They got 9 mature eggs. But then the unexpected happened. My partner couldn't produce a sample! So they had to freeze my eggs. I was so upset and devasted, I still am. I don't know what my chances of success are with frozen eggs but I know they are reduced quite a bit. The embryolgist was able to tell me that they have about a 70% success rate thawing frozen eggs of younger women. She kept stressing "younger women" but couldn't tell me what to expect with my 41 year old eggs. So I'm pretty upset. And now we can't do anything until after we've seen the doctor and the earliest appointment they could give me was Mar 27th. Feels like a lifetime away. I'm super upset with my partner, as you can imagine. They encouraged us to provide a sample in advance of ER day, but he didn't want to, he was convinced he could provide a sample the day of the procedure (I'm pretty sure he also didn't want to pay the $700 sperm banking fee for an advance sample). He was in the room for so long, he missed the ER surgery and everything. I cried the whole day.

I had so much hope that this was going to work for me and now I don't have very much hope at all. Another IVF doesn't seem like an option :(

Ahh I can only imagine how you feel after you had done so well and got 9 eggs.
Statistically I'm sure it's very likely more will thaw than won't and it will be the good ones that do thaw anyway so you still have a great chance.
Fingers crossed for you, it must be very frustrating having to wait even longer.
Very best of luck x

Oh, I am so sorry. But stay positive, as IVF is like playing Russian Roulette, you might have the weakest start, but finally it will be you who have won. Keep my fingers crossed x

Hi all I took a break from the site after our first unsuccessful IVF and am back on cycle 2. Just had ER on Friday and the results were much better. They got 20 eggs and 12 fertilized without ICSI. I have low AMH and DOR so this is good news for us.

This process is so long and draining I just hope for positive results at the end.

Panda I'm so sorry how frustrating. At least they were able to freeze your eggs, that's great. Stimming is probably the most difficult emotionally and physically so even though the process is delayed you have your eggs!

Thank you Rezza, minimama, and Yellow578... I'm trying to be positive. Two weeks until my doctor's appointment, the time is just crawling by...

Yellow578, what excellent results! I'm so happy for you, those are really, really great numbers. I hope you're feeling good and optimistic. You're right, this is a very emotionally draining experience. I have been trying to have a child for the past 4 years and I'm finally at the IVF stage and I don't know how much more of this I can take... I'm trying to figure out how to financially support one more IVF. I want to end this after I feel like I've given it my all, like I've tried everything. It's exhausting. I'm glad you took a break, it was obviously very restorative to do so. Keep us posted on how the embies develop, wishing you all the best for lots of healthy, beautiful 5-day blasts, fingers crossed, x

pandagrl - Try not to worry too much about freezing the eggs, I had 2 matures eggs that were frozen and both thawed and fertilized with ICSI and were well graded day 3 when we transferred. Be sure they are also going to do assisted hatching because the outer shell hardens when they are frozen so the assisted hatching helps it to break through the shell. That is also why we did ICSI because the sperm may have trouble breaking through the harder outer shell. Good luck!

Yellow - that is a fantastic ER, are you sure you have DOR? 20 eggs is fabulous for anyone, but especially for someone with DOR and low AMH. I'm lucky to get 2 lol. Good luck to you!!
