PIO injections

Postby queenypink » Tue Apr 25, 2017 12:03 pm

Hi ladies! I'm hoping to get some hints, tricks, support - anything really to help with my anxiety with the dang PIO daggers.

I am crazy familiar with giving myself injections - from daily blood thinners, a fresh IVF cycle, and gestational diabetes, I've given myself a lotttttt of injections over the years.

We are doing a FET and I will be starting with PIO shots in Thursday (I have to interject and say that I accidentally just typed PIO shits, and that sounds so fitting right now and made me laugh). Anyways, it's a much bigger needle, and the thing that is actually making it hard is knowing that my hubby is administering rather than giving it to myself. Haha - control issues much? ;)

So tell me about your experiences and tricks. Does it hurt that much? If so, more so injecting the fluid, or afterwards? Does it cause crazy side effects for you?

This cycle, for some reason, is making me SO anxious. About everything. Including these shots, so hoping I'm just working myself up and they'll turn out to be a piece of cake!

Hey Queeny,
Unfortunately I don't have advice but I am in the same boat. I will be adding PIO daily to my next FET cycle. I had no issues with the fresh cycle shots but it also freaks me out to let dh do the shots rather than myself! My re advised to ice for an hour before the shots and warm compress after the shots to prevent hard lumps!! Good luck!
Me 28
DH 38- varying count and motility

My advice would be:
1. Make sure the PIO vial or injection is warm before you inject. I bought small heating pads to use after injecting and i just warm the PIO vial in the pad. Otherwise, you can warm it by putting it in your armpit for about 20-30 minutes. Warm PIO is better for absorption.
2. Ice the area for about 10 minutes, till you find it going somewhat numb. Also area selection is very important as wrong area = pain.
3. Before you inject, make sure you are not putting too much weight on that leg so the muscle isn't tightened. I read about this probably 15 days into my PIO shots and it definitely made the difference. I try to put less weight during the icing process.
4. Folks recommend to wait after wiping with alcohol to help with the stinging but I don't have the patience.
5. Inject slowly, but put enough pressure that the needles actually goes through. Press the injection slowly as well. Folks recommend aspirating a little at this point to see if you are drawing blood. I think if someone else is giving you the injection, you can definitely do that. I do it to myself so I don't.
6. After the injection, have your partner (or you can do it yourself) knead the area to make sure the progesterone is absorbed and put a heat pad on. I keep the warm-ish heat pad for about 30 minutes.

PIO shots are EXTREMELY different from the IVF injections. They are intramuscular and not sub-cutaneous - hence the thick needle. I've control issues so I definitely gave it myself. It also didnt help that my husband is terrified of needles...It definitely hurts. If I don't do the after care, I have noticeable pain. I think kneading/massage makes a huge difference.

What is your dosage?

Good luck!

Great ideas, thanks so much! My dosage is 1cc every third night. Not so bad, but I definitely find that the area hurts for the next couple days after the injection. Not too much pain during, but I have troubles even sleeping on the injection side!

My hubby got a new job out of town, which mean sim going to have to administer them myself - so thanks MGK, you've given me confidence that this can be done!

Of all things, I find I have troubles getting the liquid into the syringe, even after putting in the equal amount of air into the bottle first - weird challenge! I didn't have any troubles with my past injections, but the PIO just wants to suck back into the bottle rather than the needle.
