Unexplained Infertility?!

Postby Kats » Sun Dec 09, 2007 6:29 am

Hi guys,

I'm new here. I’m from Toronto, Canada. Me and my DH have been trying to conceive naturally since February 2007. No luck. Then in September 2007 we went to a fertility clinic specialist and have done lots of tests. Everything is great - my hormones in balance, I have great uterus lining, releasing good eggs, my DH sperm quality is, as doctor said, much better/higher than average. Yet, no baby is sight. We did 2 unmediated cycles with timed intercourse. Then, we did our first medicated (Clomid 50g.) - IUI Nov 23 & 24 with HCG trigger and 200g progesterone supp. after and Dec 7 I got BFN. I had 4 eggs – 1.7 / 2.4 / 2.3 / 2.2 - first sperm injection had 70 million sperm at 97% mobility and the second one had 50 million. I cannot understand why and I am thinking maybe it's better to go to IVF right away, since I've lost all hope. Now I’m on my CD32 (!!!) and AF no where in sight. Could progesterone really do this? I am always like a clock 28 days. Will this long cycle mess up my natural cycle rhythm? I am very frustrated with our diagnosis since “unexplained infertility” just leaves you hanging. I wonder if doctors are missing something.

Have any of you had the same experience?

How many IUI’s did you do? Did it work?

Are indictable meds better than Clomid, even though I am releasing eggs? Is it worth trying?

Have any of you had “unexplained” and when you switched doctors, they finaly found the cause?

Please share?

Thanks a lot.

Hi, we are from outside of Toronto (cambridge) and eventhough we aren't in the same boat, I can understand your frustration.

Some details about Melissa's BFP...
It was her second IUI that she got pregnant. We were on injections (apparently they produce better quality eggs). She had 2 follicles, HCG shot, and progesterone suppositores afterwards...its a hit and miss kind of thing with an IUI.

A girlfriend of mine and her husband were just like you two though, they had been trying for a little under a year before they went to a fertility clinic. They did 2 IUI's and then went to IVF. They figured that she wasn't getting pregnant because the membrane around the follicle was too think for it to hatch and imbed into her lining...it was something that she would have never figured out if she didn't do IVF. She is now pregnant. However, there are many women on here that have gotten pregnant after multiple IUI's.

Clomid and Injections are very similar in that they help you to produce more eggs. Like I mentioned before, they say that injections help create better quality eggs.

I personally did 6 IUI's and I am considered unexplained fertility...I had chemo when I was a child and there is no way they can find out the quality of my eggs...no research to help with that.

Sometimes it takes a few tries with IUI to let your body adapt to a new procedure. Its not every cycle you get a catheter shoved up your twat and inject 70 million sperm!!

Don't give up hope, you are still young (I know you aren't getting any younger though, we struggle with the same comment) but its true. You have time and the best thing is that you have options. I would go and research IVF with your clinic and weight out your odds.

We were supposed to do IVF in January with Melissa's eggs and I would carry them to term, but we decided to try a few IUI's with Melissa to see if it would work...and it did, we knew we had a great back up and we had less stress on us....keep positive and know that you will get what you have been waiting for, for so long! Good luck!

This situation sounds similar to ours and I wish it on NO ONE!! So I will start off by saying I am sorry to hear this is happening to you but know you WILL get pregnant.

My DH and I were same situation. Tried for like 5 months w/ nothing. Got all tested and nothing wrong. Ovulate, Sperm fine etc. Did Clomid 25mg(made lining thin but gave us 3 eggs) Nope not pg. RE suggested moving to injectables b/c perhaps the clomid was thinning lining...so we did 3 IUI/Injectable cycles (1 to 2 eggs per cycle, it was hard for him to control my eggs, not to get way too many) DH sperm perfect and high for ALL IUI's and NOPE...never PG.

We did our first IVF and BAM. 16 eggs, 13 fertilited, put 2 (5day blas) in and we are PG with TWINS!! (8 left to freeze).

SO............yes IVF worked for us. I mean in general the odds are just SO much better. According to my RE 15% vs. 60% for my clinic and someone my age.

I wanted to move to IVF after second IUI and DH did not. We pay out of pocket so the difference in price was $1500 vs. $12,000...DH figured worth one last try to save all that money.

If money isn't an issue, I would certainly move to IVF sooner rather then later. It is certainly more intense and more needles etc. but MUCH better results.

GOOD LUCK...You will have a baby! MY RE always told me that and it's true, just be patient and trust your Dr.!!

Oh and Yes about half way thru I sought out a second opinion. He did all the same tests (which I had to pay for AGAIN) and said the exact same thing. I mean the tests are pretty cut and dry but if it gives you peace of mind, like it did me, seek another opinion.

This stuff takes time, which I never wanted to admit. It was the toughest year of my life, seeing everyone just getting pg and me suffering. The truth is SOOOO many people have infertility issues and they stink and it's not fair, but once you get over hump and just keep going knowing it will work, and crying along the way, you will get there!!
