Eating While Pregnant.

Postby acheal » Tue May 01, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi Everyone,

DH and I just found out on April 20th that we are expecting. At first I was thrilled but now I'm terrified. I'm 5'9 and 218 pounds. Depending on the time of the day my weight can go up to 225 and then back down again. What I'm so concerned about is I originally weighed 315 pounds went down to 180 (the last 35 pounds being lost due to bulimia) and now I'm back to 218 but thankfully bulimia free. My biggest worry right now is the weight gain during pregnancy. I have loaded my house full of vegetables but I'm still fearful I eat too many calories. I truly believe that although I have rid myself of bulimia the mindset of counting calories never left me which lead to my bulimia in the first place. Any advice on how to not panic the entire 9 months on every piece of food I stick in my mouth?

I did not gain in pregnancy, so it is completely possible. Do not fall into the eating for 2 trap. The bigger we are the less weight we are advised to eat. Eat healthily and take moderate exercise, the pregnancy should do the rest. Do not diet or try to lose wright as you do not want to get sucked back into your old habits. Just make healthier choices. 15lb gain is quite normal for a plus size lady and is virtually all gone again a few days after delivery.

Hi acheal,

I can not imagine what you had to go through. bulimia is a serious condition. I have struggled with my weight all my life. at my heaviest i was 247 lbs and im 5 foot 2. i under went weight loss surgery and am now down to 140 lbs. I am now seeing a therapist on a weekly bases because the emotions of weight gain have overwhelmed me. I am scared to death of gaining weight! I weight myself daily, and adjust my calorie/fat intake accordingly. Since surgery I have not eaten over 800 calories in a single day. When the DR told me I'd have to at least be getting 1500 calories in when I become pregnant, I totally freaked. I want to have another child, but I gained 50 lbs with my last pregnancy. I just can't see myself that big again. I did drop most of the weight within a few weeks of giving birth but thats because i hit the gym the moment i could and kept going. Do you have any emotional support for this? someone you can talk to when you start to worry about your weight gain? perhaps seeing a therapist or appointing a close friend or family member to be your emotion support. I know its hard, but you can do it! you will make it through this pregnancy and have a healthy baby and for a moment in itme you will forget your worries!

oh I'm so glad someone can understand me! I have been trying to eat really healthy and I go for walks every night although when we take our pug we don't make it as far as she weezes and needs to be carried...which in turn adds to my workout because I'm carrying a 20+ pound pug lol. I am going back to see my Dr on May 10th and I will have to discuss this with him as I'm like you reapette and I count my calories religiously. I'm hoping this goes smoothly and I don't end up gaining much. I just need to remember how miserable I'm going to be if I do gain and eat accordingly. Thanks ladies.

:agree: I'm 5'3 and weigh roughly 189. Before I was pregnant with my DD I was a little over 200 lbs. It was suggested that i gain no more than 20 lbs and I gained exactly 20. So it's possible to gain "healthy" weight while pregnant. Congrats!!!!

I was 5/7" and 229 when I got pregnant with my DD. I did 1800 calories plus 300 cals each tri, so a total of 2100 calories. Www.myplate.com really helps. Your plate should be primarily veggies, a few fruits and 4-6 oz of proteins. Like others have said, DO NOT EAT FOR TWO!!! I kept healthy snacks in my house and got rid of the junk. I took a lunchbox with ice coolers with me everywhere full of fruits and yogurt/peanut butter things like that.

I only gained 16 lbs. the whole pregnancy. I was recommended to gain no more than 15. I also exercised (ran the first 20 weeks, and walked 6 miles a day the last 20 weeks). I did very low impact weight lifting too. If you PM me I can send you a routine.

As soon as I had DD, I lost every lb plus more instantly. I walked in at 245, and walked out at 222. Within the first 6 weeks, I was down to 208. I kept eating the same due to breastfeeding. Then, at 3 weeks PP, I started working out again.

It IS possible to eat right and exercise and not gain bad weight even though you are overweight...so DO NOT worry! I would recommend talking to a nutritionist. Its going to be hard since you have the eating disorder history, not to go on binges. The weight WILL bother you when you gain it more then likely. It did me...but I just kept in mind, it was the little one. You might also look for support online or ask your doc for referrals.

I gained 56 pounds with my first pregnancy... but 35 of it was baby, baby apparatus, and water retention. Then ten more melted off in the six weeks I breastfed.

Keep moderately active is my best advice, and keep calm about the weight you do gain.
