Combo cycle vs. injections only

Postby HawkeyeGirl16 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 10:52 am

Just curious what everyone's experiences have been using a combo cycle (ex. Femara & Follistim) vs. using injectables only (like Follistim). This will be my first cycle ever of doing only Follistim so I'm curious about what type of response I could expect. My old RE told me that a combo cycle was good for getting 2 good follicles and that they were hesitant about using only injectables since it was easier to overstim that way. What have you been told or what has you experience been like using these two difference protocols?

for some poople oral meds don't work very well or not at all.
I guess it all depends on what kind of response you get on combo cycles.
I definitely do think it's easier to over stim with only injectables if your response on combo's has been good.

The combo basically gives you an FSH boost towards the end but you don't "recruit" as many follies in the bigining. With injects you recruit a truck load of them and you gamble as far as how many make it.

Good luck!

Thanks, Aleena. That makes sense. It also has me pretty nervous since I have PCOS and a ton of antral follicles just hanging around. In the past, I didn't respond to the dose that we are starting with (100iu). However, that was in a combo cycle with Femara and now my ovaries seem to be doing better. It has me a bit worried about overstimulating using only Follistim.

I dont use injects Pre-O so I am really of no use to you other than to say I would consider repeating the protocol you have been doing in the past, especially the months you got your BFP. It seems like whatever protocol you were on those months obviously worked out and were just what your body needed. I have FX for you this month and I'll be jumping out of my seat to see your BFP!!!

Thanks, Jen! I'm seeing a new RE that doesn't like to use repronex for patients with PCOS, which is what my old RE was using in the combo cycles that I got BFPs. Hopefully, this new plan will work out too.

I did one cycle with only Follistim and got 3 perfect equal sized follies! The times I did combo cycles, I usually got more follies and all different sizes. Currently, I'm doing Femara + follistim for the first time, and I won't know til Tuesday how my body will respond. Usually I used Clomid. I hope this cycle brings you your BFP! :babydustb: :luck:

Thanks, Lisa! Good luck on Tuesday. I'll be stalking for an update to see how things work out for you. :luck: I'm hoping that we have 2-3 mature follicles at the most. Anything more than that makes me a little hesitant to try this month.

Thanks, Melanie. It's good to hear that your ovaries didn't go completely crazy on injectables only. I would love to end up with two good follicles this cycle!

Thanks ladies! And good luck to everyone that is cycling right now :babydustg:

Michelle: Good to hear from you! I still stalk the June DD from time to time. Yup, follicle check went great, although it has me a little concerned since there were five follicles that were all around the same size. With the triplets, we only had four that were mature, but my RE seems to think that five will be alright. :dunno: My MFM thought that my body might be able to handle twins, but anything more could cause problems again. I guess we'll just take this one step at a time and see how things turn out.

Well maybe the 11's won't catch up? If you remember during our TTC cycle, I had 4 follies....granted, 3 took, but I lost one early one, but since then I haven't had ANY problems with the twins....so maybe your doc is right and you'll do just fine with twins :)

You get pregnant so easily though, so maybe those 11's will hang back a little and you'll end up with 2 nice ones :)

I will keep popping in a checking on you :)

Good luck!!!!!!

I'm really hoping the 11s hold back, but they're already bigger than this point in my cycle with the triplets. Plus, when my old RE saw this many follicles he had me coast (no meds) and kept doing u/s to watch things. The new RE wanted me to continue with the follistim to be sure that they keep growing. On top of that, he didn't think it was necessary to do another u/s before triggering b/c my follicles look like they matured pretty consistently after this point in past cycles. I'm still not sure what to think of this new office. This is definitely going to make for a nerve-wracking TWW.
