Lesbian couple......IUI #4

Postby Kelly&Shannon » Wed Feb 18, 2015 11:07 am

Hi everyone!
I love reading everyone's posts. As a lesbian couple, my wife and I have different reasons than most of you for choosing IUI, but it's comforting to know that we're not alone in this journey. We started TTC in June of last year. June, July, & August (with back to back IUI's in August) were all BFN's. I'm (Kelly) the one who will be carrying and I don't have any infertility issues that i know of. I'm 37, so i know my 'advanced maternal age' (oh how i just love that term.....ha :) ) is a factor. After the 3rd BFN last year we decided to take some time off to get healthier and regroup before trying again. We're both active and 'mostly' healthy but we improved our eating habits and cut out alcohol completely. Even though Shannon isn't going to be carrying, she's still going through all the motions with me :). For the first 3 months of IUI, i was a perfect angel during the TWW's (eating great and no alcohol) but when the BFN would show up, i would slack off until the next IUI. We decided that our healthy lifestyle needed to be constant, not just two weeks at a time.
So fast forward to last week......we had IUI #4 on Fri the 13th and are now once again in the TWW. I've gotten a lot better at not being such a crazy person during this time, like thinking every little thing i feel is a sign of pregnancy or taking pregnancy tests starting at 5 dpo. But it's still always the longest 14 days of my life. Ha :). Anyway, hopefully this is our month! IUI on Fri the 13th and O'd on Valentines Day......how could it not be?! Haha ;)
I'm sending prayers, positive thoughts, and baby dust to all of you!

Welcome to the site! My gf and I just completed our third IUI which gave us a delightful BFP, still very early, but preggers, our first ultrasound is Friday. Are you at a specialist or on meds?

Congrats on your BFP!!! :). That is awesome!! I can't imagine the feeling you get when seeing that BFP :). We're using donor sperm from the Fertility Center of California and their NP's have performed all of our IUI's so far. No meds. I'm really scared about added health risks and side effects, so we're going to try naturally until we feel we need to move in another direction. I hope you don't mind me asking, but why did you decide to use meds beginning with the first try?

My GF and I have been at it since July 2013. We did a few IUI's, one month with back to back, and then had to take some time off to save up for more donor sperm. We tried a few more times and nothing but BFN. Our doc finally said that we should look for reasons outside of bad luck, so my GF had a hysterosalpingogram to make sure she didn't have any blockages in her tubes. From this they found a polyp on her uterus wall and had it removed. The doc was pretty sure this was the reason we had not been successful in our first 7 tries. We had our 8th IUI on Feb 9th (first one since July 2014) and are in our TWW. For increased chances she took fermara (less chance of multiples than clomid) and is now on progesterone. We use Pacific Reproductive Services which is a lesbian owned sperm bank in San Fran (we live in Alaksa).

Our 5 year anniversary is on the 23rd of this month which is about when we can test so it would be great for this one to work. She is very calm and collected every time we go through this and I am a train wreck!

Kelly&Shannon I am sending baby dust your way. Also, I wasn't trying to scare you with my story. I just kinda needed to get it all out. The waiting is so hard especially being the one on the other side. I try my best to be supportive and helpful but also know there isn't much I can do.

geekstomoms congrats on your BFP!

Alaska23--Your post didn't scare me at all :). I appreciate all the feedback I can get. I hope you two get the best anniversary gift ever with a BFP!!
If this IUI doesn't work for us then I will be getting a hysterosalpingogram also. How long of a break did you guys have to take to get the polyp removed?
I hope this TWW is going quickly for you and that you're keeping (most) of your sanity :). I'm always the train wreck and Shannon has her hands full keeping me sane :).

I don't mind at all. We are both wanting to carry and both impatient (I am 32 and she is 31), so we just went the meds route. We had a dr give us the run around for about 6 months before we got in to see the specialist.

That's really cool that you both want to carry. I joke with my wife that we should both be trying right now, and then we realize that both of us pregnant and hormonal is nothing to joke about. Ha :). I'm so glad that the meds worked so quickly for you, that's incredible :).

Hi Kelly and Shannon! We have been posting in the February iui board and before that the January only just saw your post! I don't look often for new ones was pleased to see yours!

We just had our 3rd iui only 3 days ago using donor sperm, I do the posting on here but it's my GF that hopefully will be carrying she is 32, has had the tube test was all clear, we started with low dose clomid then a bit more the second two times, it doesn't seem to make too many mature follicles for us so I wonder where we would be without it!

Good luck to you and to Alaska23 sounds like you have had a long road hope this is it for you too! For all of us!

Geekstomoms still love seeing your posts and you write BFP!!!

Cbusch how did you decide on IVF? And can I ask if you did IVF of ICSI? We know the success rates are so much better and our Dr offered it this cycle but we had decided before trying we wouldn't do IVF....now I feel we may be changing our minds!!

Also hearing your story of BFP first try makes it harder to decide!!!! So happy for your BFP you must be sooo excited!!!

Hello,

My wife and I have been visiting doctors, nurses and councillors for 2 and a half years now. We have been pushed from pillar to post, told I had medical conditions, waited for test results, had literally every possible test only to conclude I am absolutely fine and normal! So we have finally made it to our first IUI attempt!

The lock is ticking down to this afternoon and I am as nervous as hell! We have waited so long to get to this point, jumping through many hoops to get here. I had lost weight over a year ago when I thought it would be soon but put back on as I got more and more disheartened. Found out we could start trying in November so have managed to lose 10lb in that time. I hope it is enough as I don't want my weight to screw our chances!

I think my ramblings demonstrate my nerves! Any advice on how to stay sane during the TWW greatly appreciated as I think I may lose my mind with worry, and suffering from IBS this is not going to be good!

Chaz welcome! It is hard when you don't know what to expect and it sounds like it's been a very long road for you both to get here! Just try and relax and ask questions to the ladies on these sites they are very helpful! Good luck today!!

Babee – We decided on IVF because after 4 failed medicated IUI's my RE didn't see why I wasn't pregnant already. We'd been TTC for so long that emotionally I just couldn't handle it anymore, so we gave IVF a try. Our clinic does ICSI with frozen sperm. Out of the 14 eggs they retrieved, 10 of them were mature, and 9 fertilized normally. We transferred 2 embryos on day 5 (at the blastocyst stage) and had 5 left that were high enough quality to freeze.

Also the whole time we were TTC all the tests on me came back as totally normal, so that made the failed IUI's even more frustrating. I did have a laparoscopy & hysteroscopy procedure between IUI's 3 and 4 where they found and removed a tiny bit of endo (nothing big enough to be preventing pregnancy) and my RE was puzzled at how my ovaries looked completely smooth. If you ovulate, they should have a bumpy texture. But over the 5 years of infertility testing they had proven time and time again that I was ovulating without meds and with the meds. This left enough doubt in our mind that we wanted to do IVF and see if there were any other issues during those steps.

cbusch87--Thank you so much!! I'm very sorry for your loss. But I'm so happy for you guys and your baby on the way!! I love that you never gave up. So worth it :).
Babee2015--Welcome to another TWW! Hopefully this will be the last one for both of us! It seems to get a little easier each time, but i've still got plenty of crazy left :). Sending prayers and baby dust your way!
ChazD--I hope the IUI went great today! I realized quickly that the procedure is the easy part......this TWW is a whole other story! :). I wish i had some good advice for you on how to stay sane during it but I know for our 1st one there was just no way I could. Ha :). I would say just try to hold off as long as possible before taking hpt. I know for me personally, the first 3 tries i started testing at 5dpo and seeing a negative result was very deflating. Even though i knew it was way too early to test and that the results were going to be negative no matter what that early on, it still gave me bad feelings that just weren't necessary. Now when i get tempted to test early (like i wanted to today) I just distract myself with other things, like reading a ton about baby stuff :). Sending prayers and baby dust your way!

I agree with the testing! Last time we tested and the stark white is not great, then if you test too early you keep testing hoping it was too early!!!! I read so many BFP stories to compare when they got there BFP, we have decided to wait for AF this time and test the dsy after it's due if it hasn't come :D
