Ovidrel Trigger Injection

Postby dbliz » Tue Feb 09, 2016 12:40 pm

Has anyone ever had to give yourself the Ovidrel trigger shot? All the videos I see online show doing it below the belly button but my nurse told me upper thigh. Now I am confused! ugh

Hi Danaa - Did you use Ovidrel trigger shot?

Even the directions say stomach. I just called my RE office again and they said they tell all their patients to administer it on the upper outer thigh area and to disregard the instructions that comes with Ovidrel. Weird and they didn't tell me why. I didn't ask, b/c I feel like they are annoyed with my 50 million questions lol

Yes my shots were Ovidrele.I wish they could explain why did they told u to disregard the directions. The people who created this shot for sure know better than us who are using it or doctors.I always say trust your doc he knows what he is doing but sometimes you need answers. All I can say is that I had mine done in the belly and I had no problems and it worked just fine..

dbliz- I also had both Ovidrel shots in the belly. Both the doctor's office and pharmacy instructed me to inject into the belly about two finger widths from the belly button. I would be interested to see what the reasoning is for the thigh.

Hopes this helps.

Thank you. Yes, I am still curious as well as to why. I think I will ask tomorrow when I get my IUI. First time I did a trigger I had pregnyl which had to be mixed so I went to the office to have them do it and she did it in my hip. I assume she did it in my hip b/c that is how you do it. Only thing I am guessing is that it is an easier location to do it on your own or maybe it is better at giving that 36 hour window till ovulation and IUI appointment. I will keep you guys posted on what they say. :)

Good luck on your IUI.I think Pregnyl is supposed to be done in ur hip Bcs of the needle size?!Ovidrele has a small skinny needle and u barely feel it.Maybe someone with more experience can make some light into this.

So it actually doesn't matter where you do it. There are two types of injections. (1) Subcutaneous (shortened to SubQ which can be done in the fatty areas of your body (your stomach near your belly button or the fat of your thigh are good options. (2) Intramuscular (or IM) which has to be done into the muscle - often your hip is a good option for that. Honestly, where which type of these drugs goes is doctor preference. Technically, the instructions for HCG say only do it IM (which typically means you go in because most people can't/won't/don't do IM at home), but you can do it (and some doctors suggest) SubQ. I did mine SubQ (and I did have to mix it but I'm comfortable doing that). I have never had a Ovidrel shot but from talking to other women, most of them do it themselves and do it SubQ. Your doctor obviously just has a preference. But don't worry - wherever you do it isn't going to make much of a difference. You'll still get the medicine you need in the dose you need it in. No worries.

I found out the answer to the ovidrel in thigh instead of stomach. My nurse said the Dr theory behind it is, even if a woman is thin or normal weight in general most of us carry our weight in the stomach area which may block the ovidrel from absorbing into your system as well. Upper outer thigh area is usually less fat and could be absorbed better.

amssmith - your first point makes sense with the type of injection and being done in fatty areas. I guess the REs at my office I go to prefer a bit less of a fatty area. It is just their theory. :)

Had my IUI this morning and DH numbers were a lot better than last time. Let the TWW begin for me....i hope I can keep my mind off of everything and relax this time!

I did the Ovidrel injection in my stomach. The RE just told me to grab and pinch the skin. I injected it on the left side and I just imagined injecting it above the ovary, and I picked the left side since my biggest follicle was on that side haha.

Hi Jubilee -

Have your Dr call in the script to Mandells Pharmacy based in NJ http://www.mymandellspharmacy.com/. They specialize in fertility meds. There is a discount program if you qualify called Compassionate Care https://fertilitylifelines.com/compassi ... -program-0 fill out this form and the pharmacy will then contact Compassionate Care to see if you qualify.

If you don't there is still a rebate form the pharmacy will mail in for you to get some of your money back. I got my rebates in the mail in the form of a check withing 3 weeks.
