IUI and backpacking trip

Postby Mwmix » Thu Mar 23, 2017 11:11 am

Hi,

I've been trying to conceive for two years and am about to try my first IUI. After the IUI (but a couple of days before menstruation) I have a 5-day backpacking trip planned (about 50 miles and a lot of elevation change). I'm in decent shape and have done things like this in the past, but this is definitely outside of my normal routine. My doctor, who is a seasoned and well-respected specialist in the field, doesn't seem to think this is a problem. I still can't help but feel like that kind of extreme exercise is counter-productive to the process.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Backpacking or maybe running a marathon/half after an IUI?

Thanks for your feedback!

I don't have any experience with this personally, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable with extreme exercise during the tww. I do know on another post about exercise while TTC, another poster said she did run a marathon right before she found out she was pregnant. I think in general, doctors usually say exercise is good for TTC, but not to do anything outside of your normal fitness routine that puts extra stress on the body during the tww. I'm kind of surprised your doctor said it wasn't a worry!

Another thing to consider, regardless of who says it's safe or not, is how you are going to respond if it's a bfn cycle or, heaven forbid, an early mc. Will you beat yourself up wondering if the trip had something to do with it, or will you be comfortable thinking it was just the natural course of things?

@beecee33 ... I was surprised that he said to go ahead with it too! It seems like that kind of physical exertion, especially because it's not my norm, would have an effect on the process. Regarding your second comment, That is a really good question. I know that an IUI/chlomid are far from a guarantee to conceive, but I do feel like it's too expensive not to try to simulate the ideal circumstances for a potential pregnancy. Thanks so much for your comments! Good stuff to think about!
