Hopefully starting IUIs soon.. questions

Postby hmContine16 » Tue Sep 12, 2017 7:18 am

DH was dx with Azoospermia in July. He is currently on Clomid, but if no sperm are seen in the ejaculate in November, we are moving on with other options. Most likely our first option will be donor sperm IUIs. I'm hoping to do our first one in January if the Clomid doesn't work. I just have a few questions:

1. Is it a fast process? i.e. would it be possible to do my first one in January? (My first RE appointment is December 4th)
2. How much does it cost? I know it's different for everyone but I'm just looking for an average. I have 0% coverage of anything fertility related, but sometimes they can sneak my ultrasounds and blood work through.
3. What is the actual procedure like? Will I have to take off work any?

Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome! To answer your questions below:

1. Is it a fast process? i.e. would it be possible to do my first one in January? (My first RE appointment is December 4th)
Should be! Depends on what your RE recommends (assuming you did all of your Day 3/HSG/Ultrasound testing) all I did was start Clomid on my next cycle day 1.
2. How much does it cost? I know it's different for everyone but I'm just looking for an average. I have 0% coverage of anything fertility related, but sometimes they can sneak my ultrasounds and blood work through.
I also have 0% coverage. Mine was $295, Clomid was $9. My second go around (right now) I will likely do the ultrasound and bloodwork confirmation, which is more expensive (but I don't remember how much)
3. What is the actual procedure like? Will I have to take off work any?
Easier than a pap smear. I just laid their for 10 mins then went to work

Thank you for your responses! I'm of course hopeful that the Clomid works on DH, but if not I'm excited to try IUIs!

Hi! I second a lot of sunshine's responses..
1- After my RE consultation I was able to do my first IUI (unmedicated) the very next cycle.
2- My RE was able to sneak my blood work and ultrasounds through insurance too, but we paid out of pocket for IUIs. They started out at $425 USD, but the clinic later raised their rates to $650. Ouch!
3- I would say IUIs are uncomfortable but not painful. I only had one painful IUI and I think it was because we did it too early so my cervix wasn't "open." After each IUI I was always bloated and went home to take a nap!!

Good luck to you!!!

Thank you! My cycle should start on December 8, so I'm hoping they can do all my required testing in that cycle and then do my first IUI in my January cycle. Another question, would you recommend starting with unmedicated or medicated cycles first? Our only known issue is severe male infertility (basically sterile) but if we use donor sperm that issue should be "by-passed" in theory. I seem to be sensitive to hormones (birth control reactions etc.) so I'm leery of starting out with Clomid or similar but I also want the best chance possible at success. Thanks!!

1. Is it a fast process? i.e. would it be possible to do my first one in January? For me the entire process took about two weeks. I did 5 days of letrozole, trigger shot and then iui.
2. How much does it cost? I Have 0 medical coverage so our total cost out of pocket was about $800. Doctor visits for monitoring were $150 (I had 2) and the procedure was $375. Everything else was meds.
3. What is the actual procedure like? Will I have to take off work any? You shouldn't have to take time off. The procedure takes like 20 minutes and then you're free to go. It's a little uncomfortable but not horrible. I cramped pretty bad last cycle but it wasn't anything Tylenol couldn't fix.

Hey hm, how are you? Maybe find out what your RE would prescribe you. I’ve heard bad stories about clomid side effects, but I never took it myself so I can’t say for sure. I’m pretty sensitive to everything just like you, and I took Letrozole and had basically no side effects (just some sadness or headaches for 1-2 days). As my RE says, the meds will give the swimmers more targets so better chance for success. I did 2 unmedicated cycles to start, but looking back I wish I’d just jumped into the meds right away. They only cost me about 47 cents after insurance.
