MFI low sperm count varicocele - iui or surgery?

Postby gpfin » Fri Jan 11, 2013 1:51 pm

me 31, husband 33
ttc #2 since May 2012 (8 mos.)

me no issues. fertility doc is diagnosing us with unexplained secondary infertility. We conceived #1 on first try, so we had no idea #2 would be so difficult. However, a urologist diagnosed my husband with varicocele in Sept 2012 and 3 SA's have indicated some "abnormalities" and is recommending surgery. Fertility doc thinks we are dealing with "mild to no male factor" and feels strongly that iui with clomid/ovidrel/low dose gonal f will work for us. SA results below.

SA #1 - Sept 2012
26% motility
3% morph
5 days abstinence

SA #2 - Oct 2012
56% motilty
2% morph

SA #3 - Dec 2012
52% motilty
4% morph

Started husband on vitamin/herbal supplements on 10/1/12. Started fertilaid 12/22/12. Does anyone else have a similar situation? What did you do the month you got your bfp? I'm trying to decide if we should do surgery or iui... Replies appreciated! Thanks!

I would try IUI and it's probably less expensive than surgery?

Your morphology numbers are a bit higher than ours but we did 2 IUI cycles while we were waiting to see the urologist. They were both unsuccessful and caused a lot of heartbreak and stress. We also conceived our daughter first try and were shocked when it didn't happen the second time. My DH is having the varicocele embolization in january and we have 3 IUI's booked for the following months. DH's uncle had the same thing- no problem TTC1 but 6 years with no BFP for #2. He had the varicocele embolization and they were pregnant the very next month! I'd say do the surgery... but if you're not worried about time then maybe try the IUI...
