Coffee anyone?

Postby lpatton143 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:18 am

Question to all 1st trimester ladies out there: are you still drinking coffee?

I am. I drank coffee every day while ttc and continue now that I'm 5 weeks pregnant. If my doctor tells me to stop at my 1st prenatal appt., I will of course. But for now I'll keep drinking my morning cup of joe. I get up at 5am and leave the house by 6 every day. Without my travel mug full of coffee on the hour-long commute to work every day, I don't think I could function. LOL Is there anyone else doing the same?

From what I've read, most agree that pregnant women can drink a limited amount of coffee and be fine. I have about 12-16 oz. per day. Do you think this is safe? Just looking for other opinions on this.

I'm not having any, I did have some decaf lipton tea because I heard that was a safe thing to drink.

I think that you might be having a bit too much. According to What to Expect When you are Expecting 8 oz of coffee has 135mg of caffeine in it. 200 is the recommended maximum. So if you go up to 16 oz, you're at 270, which is a little over.

Maybe if you can, just have an 8oz cup, or do a half caf/decaf cup to help wean yourself off.

It also says that caffeine can make your mood swings worse haha. More importantly it says that it can raise your risk for miscarriage, causes calcium and iron not to be absorbed properly and more frequent urination.

Anyway, I have a friend that has had 1 cup a day and she's been fine through out her first pregnancy, and her second in which she's currently carrying twins. So it's really up to you.

I'm a coffee drinker too so I was interested in this topic. Most of what I've read says 1-2 cups per day is all right. 200 mg/caffeine/day has been linked to higher rates of miscarriage, so if you can reduce your caffeine intake, great. Have you tried "stepping down?" Folgers makes a 1/2 caf ground coffee- not as much caffeine as regular, but you don't have to jump right to decaf.

My Fertility Specialist recommended changing to decaf even while TTC as caffeine CAN be harmful to conception and a developing baby. There are some GREAT decaf coffees out there and for the first few weeks it was tough (got headaches) but now 2+ years later (STILL TTC #1) I'm completely off caffeine.

I think ONE cup won't be too bad (small cup) but any more is NOT recommended - also got this info from my sister and brother-in-law who are Dr's and the Director of Emergency Medecine in my area.

I got my bfp yesterday. I had a miscarriage 2 years ago and have been ttc for 16 cycles. So, first thought " coffee???". I drank caffeine..quite a bit, with ds. I hate to say it, but I was young and just really drank more than I needed to! But, he was and is totally fine. I had cravings for cherry coke. I think I had one or two a day . I did cut down a lot though.

This pregnancy, I am praying that it's healthy and sticks ! I am going to buy decaf . But, I wasn't drinking as much coffee as I have been in the past. So, I know it wont stress my body to cut it out. I made some this morning and have been sipping on about a cup for an hour ...making that cup last!

I think moderation is probably ok, but if you are worried, talk to your ob. Try 1/2 caf or go completely decaf. Remember stuff like chocolate has caffeine too. I'm not a big candy eater but I forget that other stuff has caffeine in it too. I'm gonna have to buy some caffeine free sodas . Of course after they introduce the Dr.Pepper 10! I love it..just bought a whole thing of it yesterday before I took the test. Now, it's gonna have to go to DH lol.

with my first I stopped drinking coffee altogether and man was it tough. It took 3 months before I was used to it. But as far as I know 1 cup of coffee a day is OK while pregnant or breastfeeding. I will say that I now drink decaf all the time and now I am 4 weeks along with my 2nd and I am so glad I am no longer addicted to caffeine. I am telling you it was a struggle.

I started trying to conceive my first in 2007 and delivered my baby in jun 2009. I basically weaned myself off coffee and soda in 2007 when we were TTC since I read there were more cons than pros. I switched to 1/2 cup a day from about 3 ha! Then it got easier and after about a month I switched to one cup of decaf a day.

Also I drank organic decaf coffee (now drink newmans own organic decaf coffee, taste like the real thing). And no more equal just switched to a tsp or two of real sugar. After I gave birth I breastfed ds for 18 months so I stuck to decaf.

Now since then all I drink is decaf and we TTC #2. If I have caffeine now I get a migraine. I used to suffer from migraines almost one or two a week since 14 and I think it was caffeine (then from soda and later from coffee). So it's just another benefit from abstaining from it. For me.

Oh it would help to let you know my doctor said I could have one 8oz cup Coffee or soda a day. I just didn't. Like others said I would share your concerns with doctor, he/she might ease your mind. :-) good luck and congrats!!!!

I'm not, but that's only because I can't stand the smell of it right now. So sad! I'll be back to it once per day as soon as this nausea goes away!
