Pregnant with severe male infertility

Postby snowdrop » Sun Mar 11, 2018 6:48 pm

Hi everybody,

I wanted to share our story.
We started trying 2,5 years ago. First year just trying, in November 2016 we got ourselves checked. Turned out I had some hormonal imbalance, which put me closer to 35 age range - I was 28. I had around 7-8 follicles, nothing that would rule us out of having a child, but not perfect. My husband had very low sperm count, motility, progression, everything, and was diagnosed with severe male infertility. My gynecologist said it's fine, and we just need to try IUI. Well when we went to a specialist, he was not so optimistic. He said we have about 1% chance of conceiving naturally, with both of our problems together, and suggested IVF right away, since my reproductive system seemed to be aging faster. We did not expect it at all, both young, no health problems, no infertility history in both families, just took for granted we could have what everyone else had. As most of everyone on this forum, we went though some tough times since then, emotionally and physically.
First steps... we took a deep breath. Both decided we did not liked the fertility specialist and decided to go with somebody else. Checked my tubes - both open, but uterus is tilted over - hence my always painful menstruations, as it turned out. We both agree, we will try our best in improving our problems naturally with help from modern medicine. First the diet, we are both very skiny, we tried our best to eat more healthy fat and increase intake of calories. Skiny people out there know how difficult it can be.WE tried to eat more of certain foods, Husband started acupuncture and a lot a lot a lot of supplements. Month later we went to the doctor, and she was more open on trying IUI a couple of times, before moving to IVF. So we did...
1 time it did not worked, but his sperm improved slightly. During this time we went to an urologist, who stated everything physically looked just fine, and since all his hormones and other blood work came back normal, there was nothing he could help us with - diagnose - idiopathic infertility. He gave him clomid though, a miracle medicine they give to everybody regardless the problem. He said it may work, it may not, and we won't know or see effects for about 6 months.
2 time it did not worked neither. Both times I was taking climid as well, together with ovidrel. His sperm improved a bit again.
Then the summer came, and I had to leave for a work training for 3 months to a different state. Since we were using my insurance to cover some costs and decided to just stick to this doctor, as we both liked her, we decided to give ourself a mental and physical brake. During this time his climid would hit 6 month mark as well.
Over the summer I read more about natural ways to improve fertility for me and decided to include more supplements daily - raspberry leaf tea, maca, and healthy pituitary by Dr. Morse. I also started to supplement with fermented cod liver oil. My husband increased intake of his supplements as well, still taking clomid daily. 3 months passed and we were back to the fertility clinic for our 3 IUI.
I have to mention that my hormones did not improve before the summer with clomid and dietary changes, still had 7 follicles and imbalance of hormones. My doctor decided to put me on 100mg. of clomid instead of 50 (as it was with 2 first IUI). As we were getting ready for another try, we were also discussing our next step which would be going into IVF, if this time didn't work. We had scheduled appointments, and dates.
It was August 2017, My ultrasound shoved I had whooping 11 follicles. My husband injected me with ovidrel and 2 days later we went to the clinic and had our last IUI, which got us pregnant!!! His sperm improved again during this time.
I don't know if it was the supplements, the diet, the exercises, the clomid or everything together, but we did it!! WE could not be happier, after everything we went though and 2 years of trying we had a chance of having a child.
I have to write, that I felt great after taking supplements over the summer, and really think it helped me and my problems. My husband felt great too. We think healthy habits and busting with supplements definitely made a difference for us. There was definitely something we were missing. Although clomid must have had impact too who knows? It created cysts for me with our 3 try, which luckily just disappeared after a couple of weeks.

For everyone out there - don't give up and listen to your gut feeling!! I'm glad we changed the doctor, and tried alternative supplements, which is what my gut feeling was telling me. My husband was a shadow of a man for months, but he didn't give up and tried everything he could to improve his sperm. It went up in volume, progression, and motility enough to get us pregnant. I hope this helps somebody, and gives hope.

Thank you for your post. My husband and I have been TTC for 5 years but just started our first round of treatment. Since all of our tests are normal we went with IUI. We just did the IUI 4 days ago so we are in the middle of our TTW. Seeing posts where even people with reproductive issues conceive gives me hope ♡ You were right to trust your instinct with the doctor and not giving up on faith! Congrats to you two!

Hi snowdrop, and congratulations on your baby! Your story is an inspiration. Thank you for taking the time out to write this. You're very brave for sharing these details with us. You don't know how many women you helped. Most of us need something like this to make our day. It brings back our lost hopes. I've been struggling with infertility for a long time, too. Up till now, nothing. We had surrogacy two years ago. We have a baby girl now, yay! But, I want to experience pregnancy as well. I want to give birth. That hasn't been possible for me. We were headed for IVF. But unfortunately I failed the tests.

Hello, @snowdrop a debt of gratitude for sharing your story. This is really hope-giving. Truly, we should not surrender. Difficult paths always lead to a beautiful destiny. I inquired about a lot of stuff here before going for surrogacy treatment. I also read some success stories and finally opted a clinic for treatment.

This was one hell of a story. You were so motivated. I need the same motivation in life. I mean your journey is not at all easy. How did you manage everything? You are very strong. I must say. I adore you for this strength. Send some strength my side too. I am very disheartened with my failed IVF. Feels like everything has ended. I dont know what to do. Your story motivated me. I am gonna change my doctor I guess. I need more professional help. This one charged me an arm and a leg already. I just hope I can survive this. Prayers needed. Good luck for the future hun.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I love reading success stories. They always give me hope. I hope things will work out for us as well. I was diagnosed with a poor ovarian reserve with low amh and high fsh. I honestly didn't know what this meant until we really got into it. The first step was medication. The doctor had us on them for a year. However, they didn't work for us. We even went for IUI but that also failed. I am honestly so confused. Part of me really wants to give up. We are planning to change the doctor, hoping that will help. Your post, however, helped a lot. One day I would also want to post here.
-Low AMH and High FSH
-Poor Ovarian Reserve
-5 IUIs (failed)
-1 IVF (failed)
Life is a total mess
