HSG

Postby laughwithlife » Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:00 pm

Has anyone had an hsg, where they check to see if your tubes are blocked? My doctor says that is my next step but I'm really nervous and a little scared about it. Does it hurt? How long does it take? Etc...

Thanks :)

I just had one yesterday :/
My history, I have really painful periods, like extremely painful: need a dark room, no noise, I vomit from the pain, etc.
So when I was told I'd have an HSG, I looked it up and found that most people said there would be some pain, but just like mild cramps. From this, I assumed mine would be a little worse since I normally have more pain during my period.
Boy was I right! Apparently my cervix is extremely tight, and they couldn't even get the catheter into my uterus. They tried dilating it numerous times, but to no avail. It was so painful, waaay worse than period cramps, and I nearly passed out. They tried for about 45 min until they stopped and said that my normal obgyn needs to try next cycle.
Obviously, mine is a special case. Im not saying your HSG will have the same results, but I would just expect some discomfort. Try taking ibuprofen an hour or so before they do it, and good luck!

I woud recommend not googling too much about HSG. I did before mine and all I found was stories of how painful it was and got totally freaked out. I was so scared and nervous. However, it was quick (5 minutes max) and felt like bad period cramps but definitely tolerable. Hopefully you will not have a bad experience. Also take 600mg ibuprofen an hour before.

That was exactly my experience as well. Not painful, just uncomfortable for a minute or two.

I dont want to scare you, or anyone, but my HSG was definitely the worst procedure I"ve ever had. Maybe I didnt take enough advil beforehand, but the pain was quite intense and afterwards I turned pale, was shaking, had the sweats, and couldnt drive myself home. I would definitely recommend taking some high doseage of advil or something beforehand. Again, not to scare you, but I've heard many women having the same experience as I had and I'd rather have all the information going into the procedure as I can.

I took valium and tons of Morton beforehand. I had no cramps, but it did feel like someone shoved a knife in my uterus. It was over so fast though, and it was no where near the worst pain I've ever experienced.

Thanks for all of your responses! I am currently in the process of seeing how much the HSG is going to cost us out of pocket after insurance, but if the price is doable I will go ahead and make an appointment. I have heard that it is really painful and so I am expecting the worse....maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised :?

My HSG was relatively painless. The worst part was when my RE numbed my cervix with some lidocaine, however, I'm kind of glad that she did this because it sounds like it saved me from some of the bad experiences and pain that others had with the procedure. My cervix was kind of hard to get to because my uterus is tipped so much, but I didn't feel the clamp the put on it to pull it down straight or anything once everything was numb.

Have you ever had a catheter placed in your bladder? I thought the pain was comparable to that. Starting 24 hours before the procedure start taking 2 ibuprofen ever 6 hours. 1 hour beforehand take 3 ibuprofen. It will really help with the cramping. The best part is when its all over! You will feel so great that you dont have to worry about it and you will be more fertile.

I had an HSG and it was not painful at all.
My DR. Said that it has a lot to do with how the dr does the procedure. He said the key is for them to go very slow when putting the fluid in. He checked in with me several times to see how I was doing.
I, too, have a narrow cervix. Dr gave me 2 pills to take for the two evenings prior to help dilate it.

Tell ur dr. To go slow and you will probably be fine.

It really depends on your own "plumbing", so it is going to be different for everyone. Both my tubes are blocked, and it was about the worst pain I have ever felt in my life, I cried through the entire thing, and had even taken a percocet 30 minutes before. Not trying to scare you, I just believe it is different for everyone. My friend had one right before me and she barely cramped.
Good luck!

HSG was one of the first tests I did. I'm sorry but mine HURT. The nurse had to come hold my hand through it. I know for some reason, it won't hurt at all. It all depends on your tubes, I guess.
