Weight Loss Surgery?

Postby Toria1987 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:41 pm

I weigh 310 lbs and have been TTC for over 3 years. I got down to 220 about two years ago and was sill unable to get prgnant. I have been considering surgery as a means to lose 100 lbs or more. Have any of you considered this option? I know it is very drastic but I don't know what to do. I lost weight and didn't conceive so I got depressed and gained more and more weight. =( I am so sick of feeling like it is my fault I can't get pregnant. I want to start a family so badly but feel like my size is the biggest factor. I have PCOS and my periods are so wacked out, they come once or twice a year. =(

i had gastric bypass last year to lose weight and hopefully get rid of PCOS. I was not considered a high BMI patient because you need a BMI of 40 for surgery nad my bmi was 41.3 so i didnt not need to lose too much, however, it was worth everything i went through. I started out at 228 lbs. day of surgery i was 219 lbs. and currently i am at 170 lbs. i have alot more energy and a better mood in general. it is a mentally draining surgery. Your stomach may be smaller but your mind still works just fine. its the constant always wanting to eat because you use to and now you cant, its difficult to get in a routine with vitamins and eating more often, measuring and weighing your food, HOWEVER, once you get it down to a routine that works, its wonderful and worth the work! if you need someone to talk to about weight loss surgery or have questions you are more than welcome to PM me.

I've considered it not to help me get pregnant but just because I can't seem to lose weight on my own. I'm actually a few pounds under the required 40 BMI. I'm sure I could gain 3-4 pounds if I wanted it that bad though. The thing that stops me is that my aunt had gastric bypass and she lost so much weight she now has all this extra skin on her. She looks awful. I didn't feel like it was worth it to lose weight just to look even worse than I do now, but losing weight to to help get pregnant is a whole other story. Just know you may actually have to stop ttc for a while until you heal. I don't know how long, but it could end up being several months. I have seen women who lost weight who don't have as much of the extra skin, and some women have it removed but then you'd end up with scars where the skin was removed so there's really no winning.

I wish I could afford it!

Postby lisann » Tue Aug 21, 2012 2:38 pm

I have considered it because I have several friends who have had it done and have all had wonderful success! One friend just had a beautiful, healthy baby girl. (They tell you to wait for a year after surgery to get pregnant so that your weight loss has stabilized). For me, my insurance does not cover weight loss surgery or any complications of weightloss surgery, and since it is $22,000, it wont be happening for me. Otherwise I would have had it done yesterday! LOL Seriously though. Also, as far as excess skin, that is a problem that is not usually very bad in younger patients. I dont know how old you are, but I'd personally say excess skin in worth the benefits of the surgery.

i have excess skin but i see it as a trophy. i am so happy to have lost 85 lbs. i am not stable and pregnant again. They say to wait a year only because they want your weight to stable out first. mine stabled after 6 months and stayed that way fro 3 months and DR said it was okay. I was not preventing the entire time but got into TTC full blown in June got pregnant right away...m/c for unrelated reasons and got pregnant again right away. I think the weight loss has made a huge impact and so glad i did it! to anyone considering it, research a lot and talk to others who have had it done. you will not regret it, just make sure you are prepared for the life changing impact so you don't end up gaining your weight back! I am scared to death to gain weight!

I know this is an older post but thought I would add my info for people who may look at it later. Last year I elected to have WLS, I had a realizeband placed. In 1 yrs time I have lost 90 lbs and begun cycling on my own. I have had no major issues that some people complain of with the band. Overall, I still have a bit of weight to lose but have been given the go ahead to TTC again and can't wait!! Good luck to all of you who have had surgery, are still deciding or have decided to make a go of it without surgery!

I haven't posted here in probably a year or more. I just wanted to chime in. I had gastric bypass surgery 9/24/12. I've went from 240lbs down to right noow 183 lbs. Because I am only 3 months post op, pregnancy isn't even in the works for atleast another 9-12 months but I have complete faith it will be some easier once I am able to try. This surgery to me 150% worth it. I am happier then I've ever been.

Congrats all for your losses. I am very proud of you. My aunt had weight loss surgery, and she apparently didn't eat right, and got very depressed. I hope you all get what your looking for in it. I pray for you all. I'm trying to lose weight naturally. I lost 20 then gained 5 over the holidays.

I started at 236 Before Surgery but my highest was 242. Today, I am at 175. I think hubby and I are going to start trying sooner than originally planned. After 6 years of trying and 1 miscarriage I don't have alot of faith that it will happen soon anyway. Plus at 4 months at, I haven't been sick or vomited even once. I've had no complications at all. My blood work is great. I am getting about 800-900 calories a day and could easily increase a couple hundreds just by adding some extra milk or greek yogurt an the such. I hope it happens soon but I really don't think it will. I'm not sure exactly when we will start trying but once we do I am going to keep at my diet and continue to exercise as much as possible up until I find out I am pregnant. I think it will all work out however the lord wants it to work. I'm leaving it up to him!!
