BFP Ivf gender...

Postby stillamom » Tue Apr 26, 2011 7:30 am

Just looking to research how ivf affects the gender of these pregnancies.

They say that male sperm are faster and start out stronger, and females are slower yet out live the male sperm so it makes me wonder how many times the embryologist selects the male sperm because of how healthy they appear at the time of fertilization....

I think that you are only allowed to vote once, so if you've had more than 1 successful IVf what was the outcome of the first?
ETA: If you have had more than one successful ivf, post the additional results here and I'll try to keep a tally of the ones that aren't in the poll!

Perhaps one factor in the theory is whether you had ICSI, where sperm are 'hand picked'. We didn't...all the sperm were allowed to fight it out and we ended up with a girl.
Interesting poll!

I did my first round of IVF in February 2012 after three failed but "perfect" clomid/IUIs and five years of TTC. I ended up transferring two day five grade A blasts, one ended up sticking around and is a little boy according to three different scans so I'm hoping there's no surprise on his birthday :-)

Oh and we're considered "unexplained" IF. No answers but very happy we moved forward with IVF. We did do ISCI just to be sure the eggs would fertilize, it wasn't considered necessary but we went ahead with it to be safe.

Hi! Just a couple of things to share. The question is quite intricate. My clinic, for example, does not normally engage in the practice of gender selection. I believe the goal of the treatment is a healthy pregnancy, not a specific gender. Accordingly, an exception is if a couple is at risk of having a child with a genetic disorder linked to a particular gender. Just because you can do something doesn't actually mean you should. It's a slippery slope. If we start selecting for gender, people could start requesting a certain eye or hair color, or height. Anyway, I've read somewhere, after embryos are screened, in only about 15 to 20 percent of cases are there equally healthy embryos of each gender to choose from.
