Early Pregnancy Symptoms and Big Fat Positives
BFP after 2.5 years!!
This thread gave me hope and helped me through my two week wait, so I wanted to share my story in hopes it will do the same for others.
It's been a long 2.5 years of TTC for my husband and I... During the first 6 months of trying, I had three chemical pregnancies. My periods had become very irregular and I knew something wasn't right. I eventually went to my obgyn to find out what was going on. After a series of tests, I was told I have PCOS. Since my hormones were imbalanced, I was having irregular cycles as a result and couldn't sustain a pregnancy. My doctor said she could put me on metformin, but I could probably manage it on my own by avoiding toxins, eating a Mediterranean diet and continuing to workout regularly. I was glad to hear this because I do not like taking medications. So I went all in. I cut out every toxin from my home, bought only organic food, and got into a regular workout routine. I was sure this would do the trick. A few months went by, but nothing. My cycles were still irregular, and I just felt off. So I finally caved and went back to the doctor to try the metformin. Almost immediately, my cycles became regular. I was thrilled and knew this would be my ticket to getting my BFP! But after almost a year without one BFP, I began to lose hope. My doctor recommended that I go through a series of blood tests and have an HSG done to make sure there wasn't anything else going on. Everything came back totally normal, which left me even more confused. I wish someone would just tell me what the problem was and how to fix it. But instead, I was told that I have unexplained infertility.
I then heard something about acupuncture helping with infertility, and thought maybe that was a sign. What else did I have to lose at this point? So I went to a local acupuncturist and told him I have unexplained infertility. He told me he would have me pregnant within 3 months. I was so excited and didn't think twice about forking over $200/month for the next 3 months. While I do think acupuncture helped with my overall well being, it did not get me pregnant. When I realized that I exhausted all natural options at this point, I knew it was time to see a fertility doctor.
I decided to go to one of the top ranked clinics in the area and was thrilled to get an appointment right away. Finally some answers! Well, unfortunately, the doctor I saw was not what I had expected. He belittled me and questioned my chemical pregnancies. He reviewed my medical records, told me there was nothing wrong with me and he couldn't do anything to help me. What?? I left in tears. Maybe there was a reason it was so easy to get an appointment with this doctor, and maybe a different doctor there could help me, but I didn't want to find out. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Not long after, a friend of mine recommended that I try a different fertility clinic in the area that she went to and had a successful IVF through 15 years ago. So I did. I even got an appointment with the same doctor she used, although I had a two month wait to see him. That was fine by me if he could help me. The day of my appointment finally came. Wow, what a difference! Upon entering, the staff was so friendly. The nurse I met with began asking me about my past. I told her my experience with the last place I went to. Come to find out, she used to be a nurse there, but wasn't happy so she left to come work here and just got pregnant through the doctor I was about to see! That was reassuring! When I finally met with my doctor, I had never met a more compassionate and caring doctor. He was very optimistic and set up a plan for me that would start with 3 months of timed intercourse using letrozole and ovidrel, if nothing, then 3 months of IUI with letrozole and ovidrel, then IVF if necessary.
Well, the 3 months of timed intercourse didn't work, but after my first IUI, I found out that I am pregnant!!! I am now 5 weeks pregnant and I have to say, other than missing my period, I would never know. With my 3 chemical pregnancies, I had noticeable symptoms right away, so I was sure I was out this month. I wouldn't even take a HPT on CD 28 because I didn't want to be let down. However, when CD 30 arrived, 16 DPO, I finally gave in. I took a test and it changed immediately! I bawled my eyes out. It had been 2 years since I had seen a positive. I had convinced myself that at age 33 now, my eggs must be bad and it wasn't going to happen for me. I went in for a blood test the next morning, and my HCG levels were over 1,000! How do I not have any symptoms? And since I had two dominant follicles, are there two embryos in there?!
So many people told me IUI doesn't work, it's a waste of time and money, you should just go straight to IVF, etc. I was skeptical, but now I can attest that it does work!
At the end of all this, I just want everyone to know, be patient and never give up hope. It's also good to get a second opinion if you aren't happy with the first. Have faith and keep believing. And know that you can be pregnant and not have any symptoms right away!
Thanks for taking the time to read my story. I hope it was helpful. Baby dust to all!
