Help! Need gift giving help!

Postby Heather32 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 3:51 pm

Okay so my DH's cousin is due at the end of April but baby will be coming in March due to health issues...anyways they are having the baby shower the 15th of this month. Neither parent is working currently so they need a lot of the basics but ....they didnt register for any. They registered for a lot of towels and cleaning supplies and pooh decorations but both their bedding options only go to 15pds and they didnt register for a crib or bedding or well any basics. So my question is do I buy them stuff that is decoration and not what they really need or do I buy them stuff that I know they will need???

I can't stand when people don't buy off my registries, but that is just me. Maybe they already have a crib etc?? Or they they know someone who is buying one for them already? I would ask them. If you are willing to help out with some of the bigger neccesesites ask if they still need them. If not I would buy off the registry

Maybe they know someone who is giving them a crib, etc. I would call and maybe say you saw XXXXX at a store and was going to buy it for them but didn't know if they already had one. Maybe they don't think anyone will give them anything too expensive.

How about a gift card to the place they registered? That way they can use it to buy whatever they need/want. I know some people don't like giving GCs b/c they find them too impersonal, but I personally am a picky shopper and love receiving them. :)

Well...Since the baby shower is out of state on the 15th and I just got the invite yesterday I decided to just buy the most practical things on the registery she provided...that is the best I can do right? I send extra onsies and some baby washclothes as well but if she doesnt need/want the extras she can use the gift receipt to return/exchange :)

Well - everyone needs and uses diapers.

I think I'd go with a gift card, as they can do what they want with it!

Buy what's on their registry. That's what they want and what they think they need. They can always return. :dunno:

My DH's cousin just had a baby shower and she missed out on a lot of essentials. I ended up getting her a couple things from the registry and then other things like breast pads and some Medela sterilizer bags. She was really happy because she didn't even know she needed Breast pads. (She's not the sharpest tool in the shed though)

EXACTLY!!!!! That is exactly it..! I hate to say that but it is a pattern with her...and my DH's Aunt is going to have to buy everything that they dont get that is essential because her mom came to visit them and only bought preemie clothing....

I hope that the rest of our family fills in what they will need right away because she registered for a whole heap of cleaning supplies and child proofing stuff...

It is not like they have this stuff..they just moved out of state..neither one of them is currently working..so they definitely need help with the basics...

I bought the baby bath off their registry...a pooh pillow they wanted (on their registery)..washclothes (not on registery) and some on reg. onsies....(not on registery..) They can return whatever they dont want but I dont feel like I am wasting my money...

You know some really dont know what to register for. Its hard for all involved. I took a lot of time to register and got some of what I registered for and then things that were nothing like what I registered for. Maybe they figured that people like to buy fun stuff and not the basics? Maybe they thought they can get the basics cheap somewhere and so they just registered for fun stuff. Who knows. Maybe they just dont know what they need?

I think your gift sounds very nice and will be appreciated especially since 2 of the things were on the registry and 2 are basic need items that you can never have too much of. Good gift!

Thanks :) I really just am trying to do the best for them...
I also totally agree that you dont always know what to register for the first time..It is hard.. It is hard now..I am still picking up stuff for myself that I forgot I would need..Ie the breastpads..milk storage bags..ya know the little stuff...

I wish it was fun stuff but alot of it was ummm cleaning supplies and baby proofing stuff (granted they will need that eventually) ...3 different types of nursery lamps..(aunt go them a lamp so she said not to get that) and more cleaning supplies...mmm lots of toys...a train set. Anyways..I am sure she will eventually learn what she needs and I am just as sure I have forgotten stuff that I will need LOL

I agree with PP. I would buy off of their registry. I get irritated when people ignore my registry as well.
