Does your body type and activity level predict labor?

Postby danielle-g » Thu Feb 19, 2009 12:44 pm

So I've read a lot and I was curious about what your experiences were in regard to correlation between your body type and when you went into labor?

As most of you read I am going for a VBAC- however my family is all out of state and already talking about the wrench I'm throwing in their plans - despite their lack of thought in regards to the matter and frankly I could care less what it does to their plans...

I was just curious... I know with first babies most people tend to do past their due dates... some people go early with all of them... what was your experiences?

and in regards to body type...

i have a couple friends who were very active all during their pregnancy and went into labor early...

i also have a few friends who were very sedentary and over weight and had early babies...

i don't know exactly how well a poll will work to gather the data- but i appreciate the responses!

With my 1st I was overweight and worked 2 jobs(so I'd say pretty active :) ) and she came 3 weeks early. With my 2nd I was average weight and pretty active I had to be induced with him at 40 weeks.

I have never been overweight, but I was more active with with my 2nd baby then my first (because I was chasing a 2 year old!).

With my first I was average activity level and worked until my due date. I went into labor the night of my due date (after work) and had her at 3:28 the next morning.

With DS I was more active and went into PTL at 32 weeks. He came at 35wks3days.

I dont really know if that helps.

I really don't think either/or has anything to do with going early or late. I do know, however that if you're active and fit, you'll have a much easier labor/delivery!! :D

I am in very good shape, although I don't exercise much while pregnant (too exhausted, LOL) My first baby was born at 32 weeks due to PROM and my 2nd came at 39 weeks 2 days.

I worked full time and walked my dog almost every single day of my first pregnancy. I'm pretty petite and didn't gain a whole lot of weight either. I went into labor and had a 6lb 7oz baby at 38 weeks exactly. He came in less than 5 hours.

This time I haven't been walking because it's been a nasty winter and it's too hard to get out with a toddler. I do work full time though, and spend the rest of my time chasing a toddler. I'm not gaining much weight this time either. I'm anticipating another 38ish weeker and hopefully another fast labor!

Here is my story:

DS1: Gained 60 pounds, was induced at 39w4d for leaking bag of fluids his weight: 7lbs 15oz, had epidural , labor time: 10 hours, pushed 2 times

DD1: Gained 35 pounds: was induced at 40w1d. her weight: 9lbs 1oz, had epidural, labor time 6 hours, pushed 3 times

DS2: Gained 25 pounds, exercised throughout: was induced at 39w1d for size. his weight 8lbs 15oz had epidural, labor time: 8 hours, pushed for 2 hours and he came out sideways with his hand next to his head

So I probably throw off the stats a little. My most active pregnancy was my most difficult delivery.

I am overweight, and my daughter was born exactly on her due date.

Hopefully this kid will follow the same path.

None of the above applies to me... I am not overweight but I am not active or fit (I hate to exercise but I was always normal weight for my height). Anyhow , my DS came 2 days before my due date

Eh, to put it lightly, I was as lazy as the day is long before I had DD. I was 125lbs, out of shape, and never walked or did anything during the pregnancy. DD was born at 38w3d and was 5lbs, 13oz.

thanks ladies...

I guess all I can do now is stay active... and pray I'm blessed with labor between 38 and 40 weeks... I just want to avoid a c-section... which means I have to do into labor on my own prior to my due date!

I'm more on the slender side and went into labor with my first at 36 weeks, 3 days and my second at 37 weeks, 5 days (they were bigger than the national average for full term babies too). In my case, it is completely genetic. My mom never made it past 38.5 weeks with any of her five children (the earliest being in the 36th week and we were all over 8lbs.). But she is also very slim, so who knows. I can't say I was very active during either of my pregnancies. In fact, I didn't exercise at all.

I voted "2nd baby came after due date" (by a day & a half), I was active (not so sure about fit, but I walked A LOT) & I was right on w/ the due date. My 1st baby was 3 days early (and I was on bedrest the last 6 weeks), but honestly, I don't think my due date was correct & she really was probably late (she was 8lbs, 13 oz & 22" long!!).

My friend who's a weight trainer had her 2nd baby naturally about two weeks early & VERY rapidly. She said ppl who train tend to have babies early.

Honestly, I think there's sooooooooo many factors and EVERY pregnancy amongst the same person are different. I think the baby's position in the last few weeks can affect it and I think your activity level, too. Also, whether you're doing natural labor inductions methods such as sex to ripen the cervix or Dr. Christopher's Prenatal Tea capsules, Evening Primrose Oil, etc.

The first question is... How well your cervix is holding up? Let's say you have a GREAT cervix (no PTL issues...). The components of labor start beginning w/ if that baby gets it's head in the right position & pushes on your pelvic bones, your body begins the natural release of Oxytocin. The more BH you have, the more that baby's head will press & labor will be set in motion. There are other hormones that tell your body to soften or ripen the cervix & sex or Evening Primrose Oil can help this along. I think Yoga or movements that help the baby into position can be VERY beneficial in the last month or so of pregnancy. Like rockin or swaying your hips while on your hands & knees is excellent for this. Plus, it may give you some back relief easing the tension by taking the baby off these pressure zones. ;o)
