Signs of Preeclampsia and my story

Postby mom2abandkb » Fri Sep 25, 2009 8:11 am

I just wanted to post this for those nearing your 2nd trimester. Please make sure your ob/midwife check your bp all the time.

I went to a specialist since I was advanced maternal age and he never took my bp, nor did my old OB.

Once I started seeing my new OB around week 25, he couldn't believe how high my bp was. The nurse one time took it and it shot up to 180/120 in the office. She didn't tell me at the time so not to freak me out. I lied down on my left side and it went down slightly.

Well, 3 weeks later after taking bp meds at home and them not working, I was admitted to the hospital. Was in there over 2 weeks, in the ICU 3 days. Finally at 30 weeks my dr couldn't control my bp and took dd2 by c section at 30 weeks.

I never had a stroke, or a seizure. I just went to my eye doctor today and he told me I was very very lucky. If you are pregnant and go too long with uncontrolled high blood pressure, preeclampsia, HELLP, etc you can wind up blind, with a stroke, other permanent eye or organ damage. I was on 3 different high bp meds in the hospital, in addition to a fast IV drip of bp meds, and magnesium sulfate twice.

While I was in the hospital having the symptoms of pre e, I had bad headaches and vision changes like things floating in my eyes or blurriness, hyperreflexia, pain in my chest. But as soon as my bp came down, those things went away and they were temporary.

Do NOT mess around with high blood pressure. It can actually kill you. I remember every day how close I came to possibly dying or having a stroke. I thank God every day that I'm still alive and dd2 is doing well for being born at 30 weeks.

If you think you might have high bp, and start showing some signs of high bp or even pre e, call your doctor immediately.

The rest of my story is in my blog posted in my signature.

Please read this: http://www.preeclampsia.org/symptoms.asp

thanks for reading!

Holy mo! That has to be some kind of neglect of care! As far as I know, even the girls who don't HAVE a care provider check their bp themselves! I am so sorry they risked your health like that, very good post!

I also wanted to add my story!

I noticed around 10 weeks that anytime I was at work I would get these insane headaches and eye twitching. So finally I had someone take my blood pressure. It was 160/90, I was 19yo and usually my BP runs around 110/60. At my next appointment I told my OB about it but since my BP was always great at my appointments they wouldn't do anything about it.

So I scheduled my next appointment for the afternoon right after work. By the time I got to my appointment my BP was 150/90. They put me on meds and light duty at work.

Be diligient and learn your body. Had I not noticed it was an issue and pointed it out to my Dr my BP issues would've went unnoticed for a long time.

Even with my BP meds by 28 weeks my swelling was outta control, and my 34 weeks I was on strict bedrest.

My DD came 37 weeks, but I did end up with mild Pre-E.

Lisa ~ Thank God everything is ok with you and your fighter. :hugs:

jaysmom thank you for sharing your story.

randomacts I do believe it was neglect and being rushed. both offices I went to were always jam packed, so everyone was rushed all the time. I would sit in the waiting room for almost 2 hrs

This is what happened with my first one. They took it they felt like it and if it was high they never did anything about it. Until 36 wks it got so high I had to go in and be induced. Hence why I dont go back there and happy with the one I have now.
You and I were very lucky, more you then I since I think yours went longer then mine did.

Lisa, knowing what you had to go through is why I bought myself a blood pressure monitor from Walgreens ($17.00) to check it at home. I feel once a month isn't enough, especially if you're at a higher risk!

I noticed that my BP was alwasy borderline high at doctor's appointments (I think a lot had to do with nerves) but I was also experiencing headaches/migraines, dizzyness, and some spotting (only has happened once or twice). My doctor said, when I mentioend this to him, that it was too soon for me to develop Pre-e but he would make sure they monitored it and send me for a 24 hour urine sample after my next appointment. Me being me, wanted to make sure it didn't get out of hand before then so now I have DH help me take my BP every day to make sure it isn't insainly high, if it were, i'd be at the ER ASAP!!!

I'm already 'obese,' had slightly higher than normal bp before pregnancy (i think mostly because of my job) and to top it off my mom had pre-e when she was pregnant with me. I guess this being my first pregnancy i'm at a higher risk as well. So for now, I've learned from you and I'm monitoring myself to make sure it doesn't get out of hand!

I'm so glad to hear Kiran is doing better and is getting bigger. I love seeing your pics on FB and hearing how she's progressing!!!

Did you have Pre e with your first pregnancy? Or did it just appear with your second pregnancy?

it just appeared this time. I'm not even sure when my bp started inching upwards because I'm sure it was before I even went to the new OB.

I think I was at a higher risk this time because I was over 35, and I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and those are two risks listed under who's at risk for pre e.

my sis who is a type 1 diabetic, under 35 had high bp towards the end of her 1st pregnancy. diabetes is another risk factor for developing high bp, leading to pre e, and/or HELLP.

also, having pre e in pregnancy can also cause you to be at risk for heart attacks, strokes later on in life. also, it can cause you to have high bp for the rest of your life and possibly always be on medication for it. I had to take two meds after I got home from the hospital. by the 3rd week, I started waking up with a "normal" pressure and I needed to stop taking the meds or it would drop too low. Again, I got lucky there.

for the rest of my life, I need to eat right, exercise, and always get my yearly checkup at my primary and as I age, I need to get whatever tests they recommend to get done. I need to keep on top of my health the rest of my life.

Thanks for your story. So glad you and baby are doing great!!!

This happened to a girl I know as well as far as the BP goes. I think they took it all the time but when she went at about 24wks her BP was really high and they told her she was at risk for a stroke so she was hospitalized. They gave her some kind of meds to help the baby grow a little more but ended up having to take him ASAP he lived for about a 2 days and then died.

Very sad and very important to keep up with your BP. Luckily mine has been really normal...and they do check it every appt.

What would borderline BP be considered? They always take mine, my "regular" blood pressure is always excellent (i.e., 100/60) but sometimes it's in the 120/80 range ...

http://www.preeclampsia.org/symptoms.asp
Hypertension (High blood pressure)

High blood pressure is defined as blood pressure of 140/90 or greater as measured on two separate occasions within six hours. However, a woman who normally has a low baseline blood pressure, such as 90/60, could be considered hypertensive at a blood pressure of less than that - especially if she has other symptoms. A rise in the diastolic (lower number) of 15 degrees or more, or a rise in the systolic (upper number) of 30 degrees or more is cause for concern.

my bp was considered high at 140/90. but most of the time my bp was 150/95 or would soar to 180/120. that's when they gave me the shot to take my bp down fast before I had a stroke.

Wow - it's scarey reading this cause although my BP was fine at all my check ups I did have one Saturday morning about a week before I delivered where I felt dizzy and had double vision etc; I was stressed out and figured I'd wait it out and see if it went away which it did.
I spoke to the M/W on the Monday and she told me off for not getting it checked straight away and made me promise I'd phone the on call midwife, L&D or even 999 if it happened again. I really thought she was over-reacting; I realise now it could've been potentially so dangerous for both of us :? We were fine, but it gives me the heebie jeebies remembering it now I read this post. Thank you for posting, I'm sure it will help others.
