Experience with Anemia during pregnancy?

Postby 1daysoon » Fri Dec 12, 2014 4:00 pm

Can anyone that has had anemia before or during pregnancy give any advice? I went to the ob for my appointment last week and they took a lot of blood I was extremely dizzy after and ever since then have been quite lightheaded during the day, extremely fatigued by about mid work day and have been quite pale and having bad headaches....today the ob office called me and said I'm slightly anemic and I should start taking iron supplements which I bought and took right away...maybe I'm worrying for nothing but now fear that maybe the lo hasn't been getting enough oxygen...whay has your experiences been like? I was slightly anemic when pregnant with my daughter but that was when I was about 8 months already...I'm just about to turn 10 weeks this weekend.

Did they tell you your levels? If you are only slightly anemic its likely fine.

I am at 117 and the cutoff for the low end is 120 so they had me take 1 pill a day on top of my prenatals. I have always had low iron (had to stop donating blood since it was too low), but I have had my levels monitored throughout my pregnancy and my ob said she is not concerned. I only started the supplements recently.

There are other causes for dizziness and fatigue (e.g blood pressure, which tends to be low in pregnant women), but I found it helped a little to get the extra iron anyways.

Just make sure they do monthly bloodwork and monitor your levels.

Thanks for your reply B...I had a miscarriage last pregnancy and lately everything has been making me freak out I'm kind of a mess but trying not to stress....the nurse was the one who called me she didn't mention my levels and it didn't seem like they werent too concerned but I've been feeling like crap ever since the blood draw...all the nurse said is that I'm slightly anemic and the doc wanted me to buy otc iron pilla and take it with my vitamins. ...I asked what dosage and they said any wojld do so I asked the pharamcist to recommend one and its 45mg I only started taking it yesterday so don't expect to feel better just yet but really hope it helps

I asked my dietician too and she recommended ferrous gluconate since its less likely to cause nausea and constipation.

I totally understand the nervousness. It never fully goes away but it gets better in the second tri and with each milestone you pass.

I know, it's crazy! I feel like I spent the whole first half praying it would just go by faster and the whole second half wondering where the time went lol.

Although it was uneventful, I don't miss the first 20 weeks. I was so nervous and so relieved to have made it past that. I know I'll miss this time soon enough but I really can't wait for him to get here so I can finally hold him in my arms.

Lurking* I was slightly anemic before pregnancy so I took an extra iron pill since conception. My doc said that was great but I needed to take the iron pill at a different time than my prenatal because he said we can only absorb so much iron at once. So I take the prenatal in the AM and iron pill at night. Hope this helps.

Lurking as well ;) When I went for my GD test they told me that I was "slightly anemic" and Dr had me start taking iron supplement in the AM since I take my pre-natals in the PM. One thing I read was that taking calcium with iron can negate it's potency and taking it with vitamin C boosts it. So, basically, take it with a glass of OJ over a glass of milk. Hope that helps?

I thought it wouldn't matter and just took it whenever but then my ob asked me to take another pill daily. So I suppose it is best to take it alone with something acidic or water. Hard to balance all these pills though lol.
