Flu shot while pregnant?

Postby Honey Bunny » Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:30 pm

During todays checkup my Dr/OB asked if i had my flu shot yet.. I dont. I've never had one.

She said that they could give me one. I said '"No".

She went ahead and told me all the risks and dangers of getting the flue while pregnant.. Which does scare me. My DH was confused into why I dont want to get it..

I've not really read much into it.. But wanted honest opinions and experiences from you ladies..

Im just worried that I will get sick. I hear it all the time of people getting the flu shot then getting sick days after ... Or the recent case of that one nurse (27) who was completly healthy had to get the shot because the hospital required all employees to, and days later died after getting sepsis (infection, bacteria) ... DIED.. out of no where, with no previous health issues..

Dont get me wrong im not the kind who does not want to vaccinate my kid onces its born, or against vaccines, im just wondering if there is any risks, or long term issues that can be passed onto my baby because of it?

Maybe im being over critical of this.. Thoughts and opinions are welcomed [= Thanks everyone!

I get the flu shot every year, its doesnt actually contain any live flu virus, so you dont get sick, you may feel a little like you have a mild cold for a day or two, but its not bad at all. Flu on the other hand can be very bad for you and baby. hope that helps a little x

It is highly recommended pregnant women get it. I know where you're coming from though. I, too, have never gotten it and was afraid of getting sick but I got it after my doctor urged me to get it. I didn't get sick at all, in fact this is the first winter season I haven't gotten sick. Igot it back in September.

I usually get the flu shot but this year because I was on Prednisone as part of my IVF-FET, I couldn't get it. I've been off Prednisone for a month now and not sure if I should still get it. I heard this year that the flu shot only covers 23% of the flu strains going around. Normally a flu vaccine will cover 50% of the strains for that year. So this is what's holding me back right now. Next year I'm definitely going to get it.

The shot itself does not get you sick. It doesn't protect against all strains of flu though, so it is possible to get sick with a strain they did not anticipate on having around this year. Also, the flu shot doesn't give you passive immunity where you would get the antibodies immediately. The vaccine takes about 2 weeks to become fully effective since your body takes time to produce the antibodies. As for symptoms, I usually have a sore arm the rest of the day and maybe the next day and sometimes get a knot on my arm for that time. Just rub it out. I have gotten flu shots every year since I was a kid. My little brother had awful asthma and allergies and we all had to get the flu shot since we couldn't risk him getting it.

Yup... I'll agree with all above posters. I actually work on a flu vaccine research project right now, so I can confirm that the seasonal flu intramuscular vaccines do not contain live virus, so you won't get the flu from the vaccine. It contains defined amounts of particular surface antigens from 3 different strains that you will mount a protective immune response against. And yes, it does take a few weeks to confer full protection, so if you happened to be exposed to the flu prior to protective antibody generation, you could still get sick. A few people I know have reported feeling sick after the vaccine this year, but it was a 24hr thing that was likely just the immune response kicking in.

I have never gotten a flu vaccine in the past. Didn't feel that I needed it or wanted it, and would rather take my chances with sickness. But this year, being pregnant, I didn't want to take a chance so I did get the vaccine. I've heard too many stories about women who got sick and had it impact their pregnancies/babies in negative ways. I had no side effects at all from the vaccine.

That said, there are a few things that you should definitely ask about should you decide to get it.

1) Be sure to request the single-dose, thimerosol (mercury) free injected version. Better for you and baby, if you're concerned about mercury levels at all.

2) DO NOT get the nasal mist. I don't think any doctor would give a pregnant woman this one, as it does contain live attenuated virus. The make up of this vaccine is a live virus that can't replicate, so you will actually develop a low-grade, non-able-to-spread-or-worsen infection, which is contraindicated during pregnancy.

I have had one flu shot and got so incredibly sick after it I didn't want to get one during pregnancy and my OB insisted. I got the shot and had no reaction to what so ever! I am very sensitive to medication and had a harder time with the side effects from the TDAP. The flu shot was no big deal for me, which was a HUGE surprise!
