breast pump preferences?

Postby plattis » Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:50 pm

I plan to breastfeed but will be going back to work after FMLA runs out. Our insurance covers the pump 100%, any suggestions on the best/your favorite pump?

I got the Medela Pump In style Advanced. I have been very happy with it and the hospital had the same one!

I went with the Lansinoh double electric pump. I'm still waiting on baby's arrival so I haven't used it yet. I've heard of a lot of people who liked Medela but it's an open system which can have issues and has more parts to clean. Some people swear by the Medela one but I would Google open vs closed systems just so you know before you order one. I will let you know in a couple weeks how I like the Lansinoh though!

Avent isis duo. It's quiet, easy to use, and a closed system.

I've had a Lansinoh double electric since 2008 with dd1, it's been through three babies and hopefully will be this time around as well. Although I didn't pump all the time I did use it frequently enough, especially in the beginning few weeks and it worked great. I love it and recommend it. I've also heard wonderful things about the Medala brand but like mentioned above, it is an open system. They use a Medela at my hospital and I liked that one too but I do worry about the mold issues that come along with an open pump systems, even if you wash or change your tubing and parts often the milk can still travel into the macHine part itself and thus pumping contaminated air back through the tubing and into the breast milk.... although I think this is definitely even more of a concern if you are buying a used pump.

oooh I didn't even know about the closed vs open system. I know that at work we have a medela industrial machine in the lactation room. that's kinda scary that milk from other people can get in there... I need to research more on the open vs closed. Thanks ladies!!

I had to express for 4 and a half months with my son as he was unable to swallow and i didn't want him fed on formula.

I have the ardo calypso double electric pump and it was wonderful. It was easily cusotmisable to my breast and nipple size, I could pump directly into the hospital bottles that attatched to my sons feeding pump, it was quick and quiet. Some of the bigger hospital grade machines were so loud and the settings went up way too high and can actually cause more damage to your breasts and nipples.

The ardo wasn't quite as expensive as some of the others, including the madela swing/symphony. I used all of these, and still preferred my Calypso.

Confused about my options as well and any advice appreciated:

100% insurance covered options:
Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breastpump Starter Set
Ameda Purely Yours Dual Electric Personal Double Pump

$95 upgrade
Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breastpump Tote or Backpack ($95 upgrade charge)

$195 upgrade
Medela Freestyle Breast Pump - COMING SOON!! ($195 upgrade charge)

leaning towards the freestyle but open to suggestions

thx!

I heard madela did get some issues with the mold, even after countless washing.. I didnt realize there was a closed system option for other brands.. I too will look into this, since also my insurance covers it 100% I just get it after baby is born. Hmmm.. good topic of discussion ladies..

I have the 2010 version of this avent pump and it was awesome. Quiet, comfortable, efficient, and most important closed system.
