Question for a friend/coworker

Postby mrspettis » Thu Feb 12, 2015 1:23 pm

My coworker was scheduled for a hysterectomy in May due to a history of fibroid tumors (one of which is currently 10cm). She has a 3 year old dd and went into early labor with her at 19 weeks, and eventually had her at 29 after being in the ICU for 10 weeks. She has recently found out that she is pregnant again and being faced with the decison of keeping the pregnancy knowing that what happened last time is likely to happen again (Drs advised her of this) or terminating. She is 37 years old. Do any of you know of anyone that this has happened to and what was the outcome?

Dr.'s aren't in the miracle business, they can't predict the future and they jump the gun more often then not based on statistics and medical training by textbook. I wouldn't terminate, this is another baby that choose her for mommy and every life is worth fighting for. But she needs a doctor to be on top of it, bed rest before she gets to third trimester likely and of course high risk.

My mom had a fibroid that was as big as a softball when she was pregnant with my sister. It was a C-section birth and my sister came out a little smushed from sharing space with a big tumor, but they did just fine. It also depends on where her tumor is and if it's stable or not. My mom's tumor started off the size of a marble and grew to a softball over the course of the pregnancy because of the hormones. It was also blocking her cervix so she couldn't deliver vaginally. T&P for your friend.

Thank you both for the replies. I agree OCT, there is no crystal ball that will tell what will happen. They have basically told her that she would need to be monitored weekly and most likely be put on best rest from week 17-20 on given what happened last time, but by no means are pushing for the termination, that is actually something that she is thinking about due to viability concerns. It's an impossible situation/decision.

Shady: Thank you for telling me about your Mom and Sister. I will tell her and maybe that will give her some hope.

I think she is still pretty taken back by this whole situation, she had just scheduled her hysterectomy 3 or 4 weeks before this.

OCT, I think that was a pretty fair assumption. I thought the same thing until she explained it all to me. I am trying my best to not impose my pretty conservative beliefs on her. It is hard to understand where she is coming from. Will update. Thank you both for the T&P's.

While I didn't have complications during birth had 2 fibroids with my third child. The largest of which was 11cm at my 36 week ultrasound, and the other grew to 7cm. I carried to term with her. I now have a third one with this pregnancy, two are 3-4cm, and the other is 6.5. While obviously there's a chance of this repeating, there's also a chance of everything being find and her carrying to term. I was warned that fibroids can cause pre-term labor, but there's also "success" stories like mine. I'd just remind her of that. I'm not considered high risk because of them, most likely because they never caused any problems other than some extra bleeding. My biggest one with baby #3 was blocking my cervix, but she managed to get next to it as she grew bigger and I didn't even need a c-section. Thoughts for your friend that everything turns out well!

Just a quick update on this situation. She has decided to terminate. She started bleeding due to a placental tear and feels that she would be put on bed rest in the next week and be put on medications that could potentially harm her or the baby or miscarry soon. After her appt last week, the baby's HB was good and strong (and still is), but I guess she doesnt want to deal with the physical aspect. I don't agree with her decision, but it's not my decision or body. Thank you all for the T&P for her.

That's really hard to accept! I know this may sound cruel, but I think anyone who wishes to end a life should have to watch it being done. I once made the mistake of seeing an abortion in action; long story but didn't realize what I was getting into...pretty sure no one could keep going on that path seeing what it really is.

At least you are there for her to support her, even if it isn't the right choice. The choice she makes now will leave her will guilt she can't predict feeling afterwords. Praying for her safety and healing.
