Pregnant with PCOS

Postby babydust530 » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:03 am

Hi ladies,
A little background: DH and I were ttc for 1 year (2 weeks from today will actually be officially 1 year). I was diagnosed with PCOS in December 2014 which came at a complete shock to me and my doctor. I started metformin 1500mg in December, and ovulated on my own just 1 month later. I got my BFP exactly 1 week ago today.
I wish I could say I'm excited, but the main emotion I feel is fear. My doctor wants me to stop metformin and I've heard of stories that once a woman stopped metfomin she miscarried. It's been such a long journey getting to this BFP, that I'm so scared I'm setting myself up for another disappointment.
I'm trying hard to think positive, and enjoy every moment. I wanted to create this thread for other women that are either pregnant now or have a child and are diagnosed with PCOS. I hope we can support each other through this process.
Looking forward to getting to know you ladies! :)

Hi there! I was diagnosed with PCOS the day after I got my BFP. I'm worried as well, but mainly because the Dr didn't want me to start on metformin since I was pregnant. I also read about women with PCOS having better pregnancies while on it so it's scary to go without it, completely untreated. She mainly said she was worried about my insulin levels, since the PCOS causes me to be a little insulin resistant and said I have a higher chance of gestational diabetes. Did you Dr mention any of those things to you?

Hi Cherms! Looks like our pregnancies are relatively close (I just started week 5). My doctor hasn't mentioned anything about gestational diabetes to me, but he does monitor my sugar. Since you didn't need metfomin to conceive, that's probably why your doctor doesn't want to put you on it now. My sugar level was a little low last week, so he decreased me from 1,500mg to metformin to 1,000mg daily. He did tell me though that as my pregnancy progress he'll prob stop metformin completely.
I just got some blood results back and although my HCG tripled, my progesterone dropped from 16 to 11something. My doctor wasn't too concerned, but it kind of freaked me out. He did another blood test yesterday and I'm just waiting for the results.

Can I ask you, how were you diagnosed with PCOS? I mainly heard of women that were diagnosed while ttc, but haven't heard of anyone that was diagnosed when they got their bfp.

Well, we had been trying to conceive since May and it wasn't happening. My midwife had run a blood panel for infertility to start some tests since I was starting to get worried. I went in to get my test results on them, and had gotten my BFP the night before. I let her get through her entire spiel before I told her.:) I had pretty high progesterone when I had my first betas, it was at 30 at about 4 weeks. Does PCOS cause problems with progesterone? I haven't had any sugar levels checked yet, unless it was included in my 8 vial blood panel from Friday. I wonder if that is something I should have more carefully monitered?

I've never heard of high prog being a bad thing. If anything, women with PCO may have low prog. I wouldn't be concerned about your sugar. The reason my doctor is checking mine, is because I'm on metfomin which is a medicine that lowers your blood sugar, so he needs to make sure it doesn't get too low.

I think you get your sugar levels checked in your complete blood work panel. At least I got mine checked and didn't need to ask for it.
