7 1/2 weeks, have to wait until 20 weeks for next u/s!

Postby jeepgirl88 » Fri Jun 19, 2015 7:16 am

We had our first u/s 1 week ago where I measured 6w2d and we got to see the heartbeat. I had a follow-up with my Dr. yesterday and she said my next u/s won't be until 20 weeks...that seems like FOREVER away!!

I live in Canada, and I connected with someone else here who is in the same province and she also said her next u/s is at 20 weeks so I guess it must be pretty standard here. But I'm a little disappointed after seeing so many people here going in for 12 week scans and I was sad we weren't allowed to get any pictures from our u/s either.

The Dr. did say that we might be able to hear the heartbeat at my next appt in 4 weeks, but that there's a chance we won't. I know the risk of anything going wrong after seeing the hb drops WAY down, but I'm still a little nervous. I don't have ANY symptoms and since I'm thin the Dr. said I might start to show later than normal too.

So how am I going to stay calm until SEPTEMBER and rest assured that my baby is alive and growing? Anyone else in this wait with me?

Doppler sounds are pretty standard to ensure baby is alive and growing. Your OB may be overly cautious because at 11 or even 12 weeks it can take a long time to find baby. I got lucky at my 11 week appointment when baby was smack under the Doppler the moment my midwife put it down, but had a terrifying experience on Wednesday when I was bleeding and we just could not find her. It was rough, but we got it eventually lol.

Did you ask why you are not getting an US at 12 weeks? That is the time for doing a nuchal translucency scan to assess risk for down syndrome, coupled with a traditional first trimester screen. If you turned down trisomy testing, or are having another test done like the Harmony, Verifi, or MaterniT21 then the NT scan isn't usually done.

I'm in Canada and had a 12-week scan. You have to request it. It's part of the first tri screening for chromosomal abnormalities.

My Dr. just mentioned bloodwork to screen for genetic abnormalities and she gave me a form for that, to be done between 9 and 13 weeks. She said if anything comes back abnormal with that we'd be sent to the city for further testing.

I'm in Canada too. The NT scan is part of the screening. They combine the results of the blood work with the measurements from the NT scan to asses your risk. The blood work and the ultrasound need to be done on the same day. If you are genuinely concerned about genetic abnormalities and it would affect your decisions on how to handle your pregnancy going forward then you should do the testing. With my first two kids I didn't bother, I was young and knew I was low risk...and in the event that I had a DS baby I would not have terminated anyway. I did get the testing this time since I am a lot older and I worried that having a special needs baby would be an unfair burden to my existing children. If you really want the testing, call and demand to have the scan. If you just want it to see your baby again, wait it out until the anatomy scan. I know it feels like forever, but in all likelihood everything is fine.

Hi E, thanks for your reply. I'm not really at all concerned about a genetic problem, the Dr. even assured me that we are very low risk. My concern was just having to wait so long to see my baby again and know that it's still alive and growing well. I have read all these stories of people who have an early u/s and see a heartbeat, but then at their next u/s they find out that the baby died. I know I shouldn't be fearing the worst, but it just made me worry. Also since I don't have any symptoms and the Dr. said I may show later than normal. Hopefully we can hear the hb at my next appt though and then I'll feel better :)

The form I have says 'Maternal Serum Screening' on it. I did some reading up on that and it looks like you are correct, that it's usually combined with the NT scan. However, we live in a small rural area, and I read here: http://www.babycenter.ca/a544491/nuchal ... ultrasound that it's not offered in all communities across Canada. There is a link where you can search by province to find centres that perform the test, and for my province (Nova Scotia) it appears it's only offered in Halifax. So I imagine they would only recommend going there for it if I was high risk.

Don't worry, I am sure your doctor will have no issues letting you have an extra scan if you start to get really worried! Mine was really nice about it, I wasn't supposed to have a scan until 12 weeks but she told me if I pretend I don't know when my last period was, they would throw in a 7 week dating scan too lol. If she's a nice OB I am sure she would be totally cool with it.

I live in the US, so I know its a bit different here but I think a lot of women with no issues TTC nor health concerns typically get 2-3 ultrasounds their entire pregnancy. I only had a super early scan because I was working with a specialist and then an 11 week scan when I switched to my OB/GYN just because they had to confirm twin pregnancy. Otherwise, I would probably have only gotten one initial scan at my OBs office (probably around 8 weeks) and then not until 20 weeks. I also have to wait until 20 weeks and of course the time is dragging (as that is when we find out genders). I am not sure how it is where you live but here, there are places you can go and get an elective ultrasound that you pay for out of pocket (I am thinking about doing that before 20 weeks). Also, the NT scan is very different among doctors here - some due it as routine screening and others don't. My doctor's office no longer does it but instead offers the optional genetic testing (Harmony test, Panorama, MaterniT21). It's been a very eye-opening experiencing working with an OB/GYN as I thought I would be getting more ultrasounds and testing with twins but nope, just one routine doctor visit each month and that's it (although we do get to hear the heartbeats but that doesn't beat an ultrasound!).

I live in the same province as Jeep and we don't have the IPS (Intergrated Prenatal Screening) that some of the other provinces do. That means we don't automatically get a 12 week US with our MSS bloodwork. I was living in Halifax when I got my genetic screening bloodwork done and even in the "big city" an US isn't offered unless you're first bloodwork comes back at a higher risk. We just don't have the resources to be able to do that many ultrasounds. I got a dating US and at first they had me going in at 13 weeks but I was moving away the week before they scheduled it. When the nurse tried to find an earlier time they could take me, all the hospitals said they were full up. Luckily my doc wouldn't stand for that and called the radiology department and talked to the head of the department. I got an US the day after she called. It sucks but it's our system is very different from the States, and also as a poorer province we don't have the money to implement some of the things that they can in some of the other provinces. SInce healthcare is provincially regulated just because we live in Canada doesn't mean we have the same access across all provinces.
All that being said, Jeep I bought a fetal doppler and have used it a few times to hear my LO heartbeat. It was tricky to find at first but now at 11 weeks I've had no problem. However, it can be hard to find sometimes so if it's going to cause more anxiety if you can't find it, it may be better just to wait. I know it's going to be a long wait but you've made it to 8 weeks already and got to see the HB. Both really decrease the risk of miscarriage. According to this website there's almost a 98% chance that everything is going to be fine. That's huge! http://spacefem.com/pregnant/mc.php?m=08&d=10&y=12
