Pregnant ladies w/ PCOS, Metformin question!

Postby kflores31 » Tue Jun 30, 2015 2:57 pm

Any other ladies out there with PCOS and were taking Metformin? My doctor told me today to stop taking the pills immediately. Not gradually, or even finish my bottle, but stop taking them cold turkey. That seems so bazaar to me. Almost everyone else i've talked to with PCOS has continued the medication until the end of the 1st trimester. I'm honestly scared to just stop taking them, I don't want it to somehow effect the baby. I also read it can decrease chance of miscarriage too. Any other stories out there?

Hi Kflores,

Hmmm...that's strange. My OB hasn't mentioned anything to me regarding stopping. She actually had me start taking progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin once I got my BFP -- baby aspirin is the newest addition since my recent lost. Last time I was only on Metformin and progesterone suppositories.

Did you ask your doctor why they suggested that??

I actually called my doctor's office back today and asked to speak to my OB, not just the assistant nurse. And pretty much she said that since I do not have diabetes or need any insulin, there is no need for me to continue taking Metformin. She did say that I can gradually reduce my dosage and continue taking the rest of my current bottle. I asked her about the reduction of early pregnancy loss when Metformin is continued throughout the first trimester and she said there has really been no scientific evidence on that and said that Metformin cannot harm the baby and on the opposite, cannot do good for the baby either (as in making a miscarriage not happen). She said if i'm going to miscarry, i'm going to miscarry. Whether or not i'm taking Metformin will not change the outcome. She said that I was taking Metformin to help my ovaries produce the correct amount of hormones to help me release an egg and ovulate. Now that i'm pregnant, there is no need to continue the treatment. Which makes sense. I feel a lot better about it since I was able to talk to her more in depth about it. One thing i've realized is all doctors do things so differently...

I have PCOS as well, I have been on met for a year and a half. We did three rounds of IVF and finally got pregnant this cycle (w/twins). After our 6 week ultrasounds my RE said the same thing- stop all Met, cold turkey. I was shocked and scared... I have been on 1500mg for so long! But I stopped that night and I haven't felt any different and the next week at my u/s, both babies were still doing great :) Its been almost three weeks off of it and I still feel fine- aside from the MS.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
