Anyone go through with surprise gender?

Postby chorse37 » Fri Jul 31, 2015 11:43 am

I really think I want to keep the gender a surprise... who out there has done this? Were you glad you did? Wish you hadn't? How about anyone that found out and wished they hadn't? Any advice?

We chose to find out, but I have many friends who waited. As far as I know, none of my friends who waited until birth have regretted it.

As one of my SIL says, the sex of your baby is a surprise whether you find out at 4 weeks or 40. You just decide how long you want to keep it a secret :)

We opted to not find out with our third child. It was fun speculating about what we would end up with, and the fact that it was driving all our friends and family nuts just added to our enjoyment. We had a hard time deciding on two names that we both liked, but otherwise, it really wasn't difficult not knowing the gender. But.....
Very soon after the birth of our son, I experienced a completely unexpected emotion. Although I was thrilled to have another son, I felt a tremendous loss for the baby girl I didn't have. I had always thought that not knowing the gender ahead of time would just mean that I wouldn't connect too much with either gender until the baby was born, but what actually happened was that for 9 months, in my mind, I was having BOTH. I spent equal time imagining what having a girl and boy would be like. I fell in love with both names. So when I gave birth and only my son came out, I mourned the girl that disappeared when he entered the world. I wasn't wishing that he had been a girl, I was wishing that they were both there. The hardest part of this is that no one really understood what I was upset about, and since I was the one who pushed to keep the gender a secret, I felt like I couldn't share too much about how I was feeling.
If I had it to do over again, I definitely would find out the gender ahead of time.

Thank you for your story meganmarie and I'm sorry you went through that. I wouldn't have thought of that consequence but I can see where you're coming from.

I encouraged my husband to not find out with me. Umm somewhat holding strong at 9 weeks. I would like to know what gender of a little person is making me so miserable though. Maybe having that closeness would help me through this. Sooooo.....currently team green.

My sister expected a lot that she would give birth to a baby boy but gave birth to a baby girl :( , she felt very sad anyway she is now happy with her DD :) Expecting the gender hurts us a lot so a gender should be a surprise.

We were team green with baby #2 and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. I loved hearing dh whisper "it's a boy" and seeing the happiness and love on his face. We found out at 18 weeks with our daughter, and although it was fun finding out early, it just didn't compare to finding out at birth. My heart literally burst with the overwhelming emotions. If there is ever a #3 we will be team green again :)

DH and I decided early on that we would not to find out the sex of our rainbow baby and we're so happy with our decision. Going for the 20 week scan did test our resolve (we are only human, after all) but we managed to hold on and have zero regrets. We'll be meeting our daughter or son in just over 10 weeks and we cannot wait!

You have to do what is best for you. It's nice to live in a day and age where we have the choice to find out ahead of time or not.

We didn't find out for either of our first two pregnancies (both were boys), and loved the experience both times. Now pregnant with number three, we're team green once again. I think part of the reason that it is so enjoyable for me is that I am confident that God is giving us the exact PERSON who is meant to be in our family. That could be a boy, or it could be a girl, but I would never want to override his plan for our family. Neither of my sons is at all what I imagined my children would be like, but in wonderful ways. And I love them both more than I could ever have anticipated. So, I consider the gender of a baby to be one surprise in life that is good no matter the outcome.
