Hello All! Moving over from the TTC Boards.

A few days ago I found out I am conceiving my first child, and I was wondering if you all knew any great books? I bought What to Expect When You're Expecting yesterday. Any other recommendations?

Welcome, and congratulations! A lot of what you should read depends on what you're interested in.

If you're strongly considering a natural birth, Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin is full of birth stories from women who had natural births. A lot of the stores are VERY hippy-dippy, so if that will turn you off don't bother with it (a lot of the authors describe their births as "psychedelic" and "telepathic" lol) but in general it's a great resource for reading positive stories of entirely natural births, even when things went "wrong" or at least didn't turn out the way mom had hoped.

That's really all I've got for reading material so far. I also highly recommend the American Pregnancy Association's website, http://americanpregnancy.org/, for good, unbiased information. The UK's Baby Centre, http://www.baby.co.uk is also really good, but some of the medical information is not necessarily relevant if you're in the U.S. because of difference in practices. Other websites can be unecessarily fear-mongering or particularly negative when they don't need to be, which at least for me can definitely make me more anxious than necessary.

Best wishes for a happy & healthy 9 months! :)

Thank you for the response! I love reading so naturally I wanted to buy some books that could help me throughout my pregnancy. I'm not sure if I will be doing a natural birth or not, but I will definitely check out the American Pregnancy Association's website. Thanks for the advice!! :)

I totally hear you on the wanting to read a lot. I've satisfied most of my curiosities/needs online, so I've been spending a lot of time reading for pleasure just because I'm sure there will be a lot less of that once baby is here, LOL.

DANIELLE! Just wanted to say CONGRATS! So happy to see you over on this side :) I just knew you'd be joining us soon.

And re the books, I also bought 'What to Expect.' There are so many others out there but with so much info online these days I thought I'd just stick to the one book. I also found in my first trimester reading too much just made me worry about something a lot of the time, so I laid off a bit.

JEEP! Hey girl! I KNOW, I'm sooo excited..lol! About time! I LOVE your profile picture, looks like your reveal. So stinkin cute! Yeah, I think I may stick with one book for now (it's pretty big anyways). I'm just worrying about everything since I still haven't seen an OB yet. Waiting on a referral. Oh the joys of military!

Thanks :) Yes it was for our reveal, we posted our official announcement on facebook after I hit 12 weeks.

And yes the book is pretty big, I haven't finished it yet. I started out reading along by week but I've continued on when I have time as I'd like to have a heads up on what to expect later on too.

I hope you get an appt soon! We were lucky in a way that we started seeing an OB/gyn for fertility testing so once I got my BFP I got in with her a week or so later. I only get 2 ultrasounds though and my next one isn't until 20 weeks!!

I got Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. I got the e-book, which was a bit cheaper, but I found it especially helpful in the beginning when I had huge freakouts over every little thing. I use the What to Expect app and love the little videos I get each week about what's happening in my belly :)

Happy to see your name here!! Huge congrats :yay:

I suggest signing up for the email updates from babycentre and what to expect. You get a nice weekly email with pics and size details etc. There are also the apps for both of those sites

I also got "From the Hips" pregnancy book. Its not too detailed, but I thought it was great for my first time. Its very non biased. They sort of lay out all your options and leave it up to you to make a decision and research further. I found it really helpful because most books take a definite stance (never co sleep or definitely co sleep) where this one explains what co sleeping is, why some people do it and why some people dont.

I got "the complete pregnancy bible" published by firefly books and edited by Joanne stone and Keith Eddleman. It's really good! I just happened to find it at a used book store when I went there looking for "what to expect..." The version I have is from 2006, so slightly old but all the info stays the same really. I don't know if they've put out new editions since then. But I'd highly recommend it.

Diabetes is a major cause of a heart attack. More than 60 percent of all people who come to the hospital because of a heart attack or because of acute circulatory disorders of the heart muscle, have diabetes or at least a disturbed glucose metabolism.
