Heartburn Relief during Pregnancy?

Postby Txjess4 » Tue Dec 22, 2015 1:49 pm

I just left my doctors and if I remember correctly (dang pregnancy brain) she told me I could take Pepcid 2x a day for heartburn relief, but I have a friend who said her doctor told her Zantac...does anyone know which is correct? Or are both ok? Has anyone taken these before with no issues?

They both do the same thing. I personally felt like Pepcid Complete worked the best (and only need 1 a day), as far as antacids. However, I try to avoid (or strictly limit) the use of them now and have had GREAT success with D. Limonene, to where I don't even need antacids most of the time anymore. It helps balance your stomach acid so your body isn't trying to make up for what was reduced with the antacid (and therefore cause a need fore more), and is also effective against h. pylori (a common cause of acid problems and even morning sickness).

With my DS I used Tums on a daily basis to help my heart burn...only when I really needed them. I was always, tmi, throwing up in my mouth so that helped to stop that.

I used Tums, large glasses of milk, and Zantac when it got really bad. Zantac's generic name is Ranitidine, you can often get it much cheaper in generic form :)

If your doctor tells you that Pepcid is okay, it's generally okay. You can certainly search for it online to find out, but unless you have a reason to suspect your doctor is incompetent (in which case I suggest changing doctors ASAP!) then it's fine. Every doctor/practice has their own preferences for which OTC drugs they will recommend based on what they have found work best for their patients, out of all of the safe options available.

I would chew tums like crazy with ds and after a while they just didn't work... no one told me I could take zantac until the last month of my pregnancy. It ended up eating the lining in my esophagus from having so much acid rising up all of the time. I now have heartburn quite often... I wish someone had told me I could take zantac if it got that bad so I wouldn't have this problem for the rest of my life. I would try tums first but don't shy away from zantac if it gets thst bad.
