Anyone had a membrane sweep before?

Postby SaSears » Fri Jan 29, 2016 6:49 pm

I will be almost 39 weeks at my appointment next Friday. Today my doc talked about doing a membrane sweep next week if I wanted to. I've heard they're super uncomfortable, but I was wondering if anyone on here has had them before and wanted to share their experience! Today I was 1-2cm and 70% effaced, so I feel like if I really try to help my cervix out this week, a sweep could really help! Any thoughts/experiences? Thanks ladies! :)

I don't have experience with this, and I don't recall my Doc doing it. He did break my water after I went into labor and was at the hospital?? But I don't see the point in doing extra things unless your body isn't doing what it's supposed to. Yours sounds like it is. Unless you go over your date, I would just let your body do its own thing. IMO

I don't have personal experience but I had read a lot of birth stories. Usually if the woman gets a sweep, her labor will start within 24-48 hrs after it occurred. I would do it if you are ready to get the baby out soon.

I've had it done, and I've done it myself. It's helped put me into labor with two of my four kids. Done nothing the other times. I dilate a LOT before I finally start (like as much as 5cm sometimes), so you'd think it would just get the dang process going every time, but it's definitely an "if baby is ready" thing. I've only ever had success with it after my due date, though.

A close friend of mine had it done, she said she barely felt it when the doctor was doing it. Unfortunately, it did not jump start labor. A week went by and her next appointment the doctor did another sweep and that evening she went into labor. So timing could be different for everyone as to how quickly it helps labor progress.

My doc tried to do one yesterday, but she said I was too closed and she couldn't get her finger in. :/

I had it done with my first... was done at about 10am, my water broke that evening at 8:30pm and had my daughter at 5:29 am.... i was 37.5 weeks.... was not painful, maybe slightly uncomfortable for a moment, but that was it! you need to be slightly dilated for them to even attempt
