Name advice/opinions for our son

Postby syme » Thu Sep 29, 2011 1:39 pm

We're having a terrible time coming up with a name me and DH both like and agree on.

DH's most important factor is that the name is really different.

To me, I want the name to be unique but familiar and not too out there. I want something he can be comfortable with, as a kid and an adult. Something that won't be made fun of.

I'm feeling so frustrated because it seems like DH just cares about the 'out there' factor and not so much about what our son will have to grow into. :?

Here is our list:

Rhydian (ridd-ean) - probably my top name on DH's list, though I hate there's no good nickname in it
Cian (Key-an)
Cillian (Kill-ean, but DH wants to pronounce as Seel-ean if we use it)
Cieran (Keer-an)
Dashiell (Dash-el)
Fenris (DH's favorite, it's okay but I hate the meaning - a demon wolf from Norse mythology, son of Loki)
Asher - my #1, but DH says it's too popular, I think he's ruled it out completely
Kai
Tristan
Peregrine - another DH favorite, but I hate the nicknames Perry and Pip
Caerwyn - DH's 2nd favorite, but sounds too feminine to me (Care-win)
Alexander - I'm not super into these last two, but they're the most normal names
Gabriel

We've looked at so many names, I'm starting to feel indifferent towards all of them. We've been debating for 10 weeks now and I'd really like to call this boy something.

If you think they're all crazy (or some are totally 'omg what are you thinking calling a child that') please say so...I think I'm losing my ability after looking at them for so long.

Rhydian (ridd-ean) - Its unique and I think I like it? I really like that it shouldnt get mispronounced.
Cian (Key-an) - I don't like it b/c it will get mispronounced.
Cillian - dont like
Cieran (Keer-an) - again the mispronounciation.
Dashiell (Dash-el) - same thing
Fenris - don't like it
Asher - I like this one and I don't think its too popular. It wasn't even in the top 100 last year.
Kai - I think it sounds like a nick name
Tristan - I like this one
Peregrine - Yuck!
Caerwyn - I agree...too feminine.
Alexander and Gabriel- I am guessing these are too normal for your tastes and I agree!

I hope I didn't sound too harsh- just being honest!!! I have a Schaefer- hardly anyone is named Schaefer and I always get compliments on it!!! :D

I'm a preschool teacher and Tristan is pretty common here.

I like Asher!

I love Asher too! Our son is Ashton (still my favourite) and I call him Asher as a nickname sometimes. I also love Kai (my DS2 Benji was going to be called Kye and it's his middle name). I just don't like the spelling 'Kai' as I have heard it mispronounced as 'Kay'. I also Cian pronounced 'kye-an'. Good luck! I know how hard it is - we really struggled with our last 2 kids

I agree with many of Beth Ann's points. Most of the names that start with C, I think they will be mispronounced always as a soft C.

I think my favorite name is Cieran, but I think it would do better spelled with a K out front!

I also like Rhydian. It's unique but not too out there. I do think that most people will pronounce it "RY-dian", though.

At first I really didn't like Fenris, but I think the nickname "Fen" is cute :)

Good luck choosing!

Rhydian (ridd-ean) - sounds kinda girly to me. there was a character in the video game final fantasy named Rhydia - it was a little girl with green hair lol
Cian (Key-an) - this will never get pronounced that way
Cillian (Kill-ean - again, pronounciation. also is too close to "cilia" which are basically little hairs
Cieran (Keer-an) - pronunciation again. if you like these names maybe go with a more phonetic spelling?
Dashiell (Dash-el) - kinda cool but i don't like the spelling
Fenris - i like this one and its meaning :D
Asher - i like this one too
Kai - girly
Tristan - it's okay
Peregrine - kinda cool but gotta agree about the nicknames
Caerwyn - don't really like it
Alexander - a nice classic
Gabriel - same as above

Rhydian (ridd-ean) -reminds me of UK x factor and nickname is a problem.
Cian - ok-ish
Cillian (Kill-ean, but DH wants to pronounce as Seel-ean if we use it) eh? sill-ean??????no!!!!!
Cieran - bearable
Dashiell - Love!
Fenris - the meaning is dreadful.....who wants a demon child lol
Asher - nice
Kai -girly
Tristan - like it i know its getting common
Peregrine - nope, does it sound like'whine'? i think its the 'grine'y bit
Caerwyn - too feminine
Alexander - love, its my sons middle name
Gabriel-- not on a boy.

I love different names! Our son has such a unique name, and I love the fact that no one else in his class will have the same name as him!

he is Taiven. pronounced Taay-ven. He has a very common middle name, which also happens to be my DH's name.

our DD is Paizlei (paisley). Her middle name is more unique (Lulu).

Good luck in your name search!!!!

I didn't really like any of those except for Tristan, Alexander and Gabriel. We are also trying to come up with boy names (in case it's a boy) and we wanted something unique.. and it's REALLY tough!!!

We came up with Maximus, (Max for short) as one name we both like and agree on. lol.. other than that.. it's gonna take awhile!!!
