Girl Name - Which do you like more?

Postby elster » Wed Jan 14, 2009 5:15 pm

We've pretty much decided on the name, but we're having trouble with the spelling. It's going to be Kaya Rose or Kaiya Rose, both spelled like "Maya" but with a "K". Not sure which one we should go with. Kaya is Scandinavian, meaning "pure" (we're both of Scandinavian descent) but I worry that people will pronounce it Kay-ah. Kaiya is Japanese meaning forgiveness, and I think the spelling makes the pronunciation more clear, but I'm not sure about the meaning (don't want her to think she was the product of make up sex or something.) I'd love to get feedback.

I, for one, read both in my head as pronounced the way you intended.

That said - the Kaiya spelling leaves no doubt at all as to the correct pronunciation, whereas I can see someone occasionally saying Kaya wrong. But with Maya being relatively popular these days, I don't think you're taking a big risk spelling it that way (as Kaya) - I bet you will seldom have to correct people on the pronunciation.

I like both spellings so I didn't vote. LOL My niece's name is Kaya and I don't think anyone ever calls her Kay-ah. I really like the name.

You'll probably run into people mispronouncing it as people seem to do with any name, but that's okay! People never get Callum's name right and I was shocked because I figured it was an easy one (Cal, like California and then "um"... people always call him Kale-um). My name is Ami (like Amy), which seems pretty simple, but I always have people trying to put an ethnic twist on it. LOL It really doesn't bother me though. :dunno:
