Pregnancy and Emetophobia

Postby oktober » Sat Jun 08, 2013 2:17 pm

Are there any other ladies out there dealing with emetophobia while pregnant? I've had the intense fear of vomiting/seeing people vomit since I can remember, and the thought of having morning sickness absolutely terrifies me. I'm horrified at myself that I've subjected myself to this, yet incredibly excited all at the same time.

Since finding out I was pregnant (two days ago) I have been incredibly nervous, anxious and emotional. And the majority of the stress is stemming from my emetophobia... Ridiculous!

Please tell me I'm not the only one here :).

You can ask for Zofran. Seriously, it's a Godsend. It has helped my nausea SO much.

Yes, Yes, Yes! I have had emetophobia since I was 7 (I am now 32). I am currently preggers with baby #3 (6 weeks along). With my first, I was so excited, then there was that "Oh what did I do???" when I thought about the possibility of morning sickness. I remember feeling just as you described. In the past, if I had been exposed to the virus I simply would not eat. I figured nothing in my tummy, nothing coming up! My parents took me to every shrink and doctor known to man to try and get help for me. After being married for 5 years and refusing to have children because of my fear of vomiting, my husband started doing his homework. He found a man that deals with this fear directly and he does it all over the phone. I have never written anything online, but I saw your post and immediately had to create an account and respond. This man, Peter Leonard, changed my life!!! The fear is now more of a concern. He asked me (when I started the phone thearapy with him) if I could survive if my fear was the size of my pinky toe. Well, at that point it had been larger than I was so I was so excited to tell him Yes...I could handle that. And today, I am so thrilled to say...that is just about how big it is. I still haven't thrown up since I have been 9. You will find through research that us emets rarely get sick because we do not allow our bodies to do that. I have zofran on hand just in case. Please tell your OB about your fear...they will understand. If not, you have the wrong doctor. I never had any MS with either of my babies and pray I do not with this one. Prayer, positive thoughts, deep breaths, watch silly comedies and try to keep your mind occupied. I will gladly give you Peter's contact info if you need it. I'm telling you, I am pregnant because of him. :) Also, there will probably be a time where you think am I hungry or nauseaus...eat! It helps. Lots of love and I will be praying for you. You can do this!!!

OMG!!! I have this!! I never called it emetophobia but that is it!! I have had it since I was a child. I have been to therapy and really freak out of I think I may throw up or of someone else does. I can count how many times I have thrown up on 2 hands. It is very hard. I have not thrown up yet, but I have had all day m/s. It scary when you cannot take the meds you know will help you not thrown up in the past!! I keep reminding myself that most ppl do not throw up wih morning sickness. I admit that I am very scared and I have taken some meds to prevent throwing up but I am making it through it! I am over 8 weeks - almost 9. I have found that its bad for a few days then get better. Its very frustrating when someones says -- Just throw up you will feel better!! makes me want to cry because I want to feel better but I cant throw up!!!

I also am on this special diet whitch seems to be helping!! See the diet here:

Luckily, I have a very supportive partner that helps me & relaxes me!! I could not do this alone!! I am also scared of after the baby born and the baby thowing up!!

I am so relieved to hear that I am not alone. I have had emetophobia since I was about 11.. I have only puked once, when I was 6.. I am 31 and now pregnant. I can't tell you how scared I am.. I am 5 weeks and everyday wake up terrified that today will be the day morning sickness rears it's ugly head. I do have an Rx for Zofran as I have one of the most severe cases of IBS that my Dr has ever seen. Help!

I wouldn't say I have a phobia about throwing up, but I definitely have a really strong stomach in general and hate hate hate throwing up (I used to cry). Or when my kids throw up. I have never really had ms bad, just feeling nauseus and like I am about to but never do. I hate when people say to just throw up and you'll feel better. My dh is like that, and my god can that man vomit! I hate it when he is sick because he just keeps going and going. I am worried a bit about getting bad ms this time, but I think I have got it. Remain positive and you'll be fine.

Have all you emetophobes been successful at not vomiting. I'm nearly 6 weeks and this past week has been horrible. Especially today. I missed a family dinner cause I couldn't even leave my house and came very close to actually vomiting a couple times. Took deep breaths and covered my mouth and swallowed hard. I also suffer from severe ibs. And the pain after anything I eat is so awful. I'm always running to the washroom and am never sure what's gonna happen. I always end up just having loose stools but it upsets my stomach and the pain causes the nausea to be worse. Anyone else? Can I overcome it or will I succum to it? Terrified. It's been 16 years since I've vomited.

Have you asked your dr for any meds? My ob gave me zofran, which dissolves on the tongue. It was able to get me through the worst of my nausea weeks 7-12.
