Headaches

Postby Mantis » Sat Apr 25, 2015 3:19 am

Hi all

I'm almost 6 weeks pregnant and today I started having the worse headache. Throbbing all day on the RHS and achey feeling across the forehead. I am really nervous about the rising levels of estrogen that is meant to occur during pregnancy. I say this because when I was 16 I tried to take the combined pill and I had the worse headache I can possibly describe, it felt like my skull was about to burst and I was vomiting severely, this lasted several days until the drug was out of my system. I have read that people with bad reactions to contraception can experience bad reactions to the changing hormones in pregnancy?

Has anyone else had similar experiences to the pill and had an OK time during pregnancy? If these headaches get any worse I am going to struggle to stay enrolled in my PhD during my pregnancy :(

Tylenol (acetaminophen) is also a pregnancy safe pain reliever for headaches according to several resources. Not ideal, but it gives you an option for future headaches.

Yeah I took paracetamol every four hours for it to be honest it didn't do much.

Taking the painkillers like paracetamol for long periods during pregnancy is not safe. Lowest dose for the short time is advisable.
I have read few articles saying that paracetamol interferes the normal brain development of a baby. So it is always better to consult the doctor before taking any medicines during pregnancy.

It may not be your thing, but a can of coke with a tylonal has helped me loads when I get a headache. The caffeine helped make blood flow easier and the med helped take off the edge. Obviously not an every day thing but it works. Hate to say this but the headaches I felt a few months ago are not bad compared to now. I feel like I get a headache everyday! But only on the really bad ones do I do the coke/tylonal trick. Coke also helps with nausea, my dr said, so if you get that then its a win win!

The normal dose for paracetamol is 2 tablets every four hours with a maximum of 8 tablets in every 24 hours. There is no such thing as high versus low dose of paracetamol like with other drugs where you vary the mgs. It's always two tablets per dose. I never exceed the recommended dosage and there is no evidence paracetamol is harmful during pregnancy. Fyi Tylenol is a brand name for acetaminophen which is the drug name of paracetamol
