Sugary Beverages and M/S

Postby Fairy Wings » Mon May 25, 2015 5:31 am

I'm kind of concerned about my fluid intake (or lack thereof) lately. Every time I attempt to drink water I either get really nauseous or I throw it up. The only fluid I can drink is Gatorade and at the most I'm able to drink 40 oz a day. I have tried so many different drinks with less sugar and it all makes me sick. I am able to drink milk but it makes me really constipated so I limit it to one glass a day. My concern is that there's way too much sugar in Gatorade. I'm also drinking about two smaller cans of ginger ale a day, which is even more sugar and I don't think carbonated beverages really count as fluids since they are diuretics. I know even women with no history of diabetes can get gestational diabetes so I want to be careful and I'm usually very diligent about limiting my sugar intake but if I stop drinking Gatorade, I don't know how I'm going to get enough fluids. Anyone in the same predicament or have thoughts on this?

hmm that is an interesting predicament. I drink a lot of teas and decaf coffees, are you able to drink those at all? There are so many different tea flavours that maybe there is one that will work for you? Also maybe you can try eating more soups or stews to help increase the liquid intake through food as well. Or eating juicy fruits like watermelon

When I was going through my IVF, I was on a lovely diet of salt/Gatorade to prevent OHSS. I found out that coconut water was just as good for electrolytes without all the sugar - have you tried that? Personally, I can't stomach coconut water, but my hubby loves it, and now drinks it after a workout.

Justxher, coffee and tea makes me very sick as well. I have to have one cup of coffee a day to prevent migraines (last time I stopped I ended up with status migrainosus) and I can barely drink keep it down. I would probably eat nothing but watermelon though if I that were healthy lol. Not sure how much fluid that's giving me, but its better than nothing.

Queeny, not sure about coconut water. I haven't tried it but that gives me something new to try!

Care, I'm going to pick up some lemons when I get the coconut water later. Hopefully one of them will work lol. I have heard about lemons helping with m/s but I didn't think to put them in water.

Thanks ladies! :D

I know its hard to stay away from sugar drinks (especially in our society haha) but my dr said its not to big of a concern, as long as your getting fluid and keeping it down. Thats the big concern. I had to drink a coke everyday, little did I know it helped with MS haha but I just felt like I needed one. Baby is great and healthy so far! So I wouldnt worry to much about it, as long as your getting something in you, then you should be okay.

Sumia, glad to hear your doctor said that! I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and keep this baby hydrated!

Justxher, Yes I'm almost there so hopefully in the near future I can drink all the water I want without feeling sick after!

Gosh I hear you on this!! Morning sickness throws everything off. Before I got pregnant I invested in decaf black tea because I'm obsessed with black tea, and I grew to enjoy the taste of the decaf version to prepare for pregnancy. Now that morning sickness is here, I hate the taste of just about everything. Can't stand tea anymore of any kind, can't stand lemonade, can't stand ginger-ale. I drink water only when I'm thirsty because I hate that too. In very small amounts I can tolerate a coke - but not much because it tastes WAY TOO SWEET.

I never had a problem with sweets, in fact normally I am SWEET-OBSESSED. But now I'm totally turned off by sweets and I NEVER thought that would happen.

Actually, there is one thing I absolutely crave, and I would kill for one but I dare not due to concerns over artificial sweetners in pregnancy, but I would KILL FOR A COKE ZERO!!!!! I think diet sodas taste better anyway, not too sweet, just perfect.

It's quite a predicament...

Hmm i do have another possible suggestion, you can try to get water in a cup with a straw and just take a small sip every few minutes, and maybe just try going that throughout the day. So you're never drinking a large amount and hopefully don't get sick
