Diet world into pregnancy world....

Postby aboulanger » Fri Jun 19, 2015 10:56 am

Over the last two years I came from 180 pounds (5'2") to 130 pounds through diet and exercise.

Now that I'm pregnant (4 weeks 4 days) what should my calories be?

I've been eating between 1300-1400 and walking/running all this time (with normal cheat days throughout the months).

I read that I should add 100-300 calories a day for the pregnancy. Is that added on to what I've been eating diet wise or added on from a maintaining calorie level (1800?).

I believe that should be added on from a maintenance level. Everything I have read warns against trying to lose weight during pregnancy, so my understanding from that is you should be planning a maintenance diet with baby calories added to it.

Congratulations on both your successful weight loss journey and your pregnancy!

I also want to add, your exercise routine should be perfectly fine to continue with as long as your doctor is okay with it and you have no pregnancy complications.

Great job on the weight loss, that's amazing!

I agree, it should be from a maintenance level and not a weight loss level, it is not safe to diet during pregnancy. However you should definitely keep up your exercise routine as that will bring great benefits during pregnancy and birth.

I lost a lot of weight before baby as well and have struggled to not gain a bunch during my pregnancy!

I was eating only around 1600 calories a day and my doctor told me that wasn't enough during my second trimester; he wanted me at 2250 per day split up over 3 meals of 500 calories each and three snacks of 250 calories each. So I'd just ask your doc :)

Keep eating healthfully most of all - my downfall during the first trimester was morning sickness and I could basically only keep down white carbs, which I hadn't eaten in close to a year.
